Why ‘Friends’ Hasn’t Had A Reboot Yet

Published on December 26, 2019

It seems like every show we grew up watching is returning as a revival or reboot, including Full House, Will & Grace, Mad About You, and many more. However, there’s one famous show that hasn’t returned to television: Friends. Jennifer Aniston revealed someone might be at blame for this.

An Iconic Sitcom

Friends is one of the most popular, iconic sitcoms of all time. Premiering in 1994, the sitcom still resonates with fans of all ages. Teenagers and young adults fall in love with the characters—Monica, Rachel, Chandler, Joey, Ross, and Phoebe—because they find them relatable.

The show works because every character is different, and fans could find a version of themselves in at least one of the characters. You have Monica Geller (Courteney Cox), who is a control-freak chef. Her brother, Ross (David Schwimmer), is a geeky, divorced paleontologist. He is in love with Monica’s best friend, Rachel Green (Aniston), who was born with a silver spoon, but she matured into a loving adult and successful businesswoman in fashion.

Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) is a spiritual, kooky masseuse. Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) is an actor playboy who will do anything for his friends. Finally, there’s Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), who’s funny, sarcastic and always delivers the best one-liners.

Friends is a true “ensemble show,” which features every character equally. There isn’t a “main character.” Viewers learn about them equally. The actors had brilliant on and off-screen chemistry, which makes the show all the more enjoyable to repeatedly watch over and over again.

Asking For A Reboot

Because Friends is such a beloved show, it’s no wonder fans want to see what the “friends” are up to today. Are Ross and Rachel still together? Did Joey ever settle down? Are the friends still as close as they were when the show ended in 2004? Or, has life gotten in the way of their friendships?

During a recent appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden, Jennifer Aniston revealed that she would be willing to star in a reboot of Friends. She has spoken with Cox and Kudrow, and they are also on board with the potential project. However, their male co-stars (Schwimmer, Perry, and LeBlanc) are less excited.

“Listen, the girls always say we would love to do it again, and the boys are a little less excited about it for some reason, I don’t know,” Aniston said. “And so, we’ve decided that we’ll just do…a remake of The Golden Girls in 40 years.”

Why They Say No

It seems the male “friends” aren’t interested in returning to television as their iconic characters, particularly LeBlanc, who has been vocal about his feelings concerning a reboot. He told Mail Online, “I don’t want to do it—simple.”

LeBlanc added, “People want to know what happened to them. But it was about a finite period in a person’s life after college, before you settle down and start a family. To go back and revisit all these years later, well, I don’t know what the story would be now. They would all have moved on from that period, so it just wouldn’t be the same. Put bluntly, I don’t think anybody wants to see an old Joey having a colonoscopy.”

Schwimmer also remarked, “Look, the thing is, I just don’t know if I want to see all of us with crutches and walkers.”

Finally, Perry drove home his opinion on the subject. He commented, “The thing is: we ended on such a high. We can’t beat it. Why would we go and do it again?”

It doesn’t seem like we will have a Friends reboot anytime soon. If we do, it will just feature the girlfriends. But how can you have Friends without Ross, Joey, and Chandler? It looks like they’re on a break from the girls.
