What’s Going On With Deadpool? Director David Leitch Wants To Know
Published on August 1, 2019
With Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will expand with the X-Men and Fantastic Four. One character that’s seemingly in the air is the foul-mouthed Deadpool. When it comes to Deadpool’s future, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch is just as concerned.
Wait Til You Get A Load Of Me
At the premiere of Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Leitch was asked about Deadpool 3. The director knows that a potential third film would be a smash hit for Marvel Studios. “In everybody’s world, everybody wants to make it. So, if I was ever approached to make Deadpool 3, my answer would be, ‘Hell yes,’ but I think there’s a lot of things going on in the shake-up with Fox and Disney and where that whole Marvel world after Endgame is gonna be. When the dust settles, let’s hope that Deadpool lives. That’s kind of ironic, right?,” he told ComicBook.com.
While he has a potential storyline, he’s keeping it a secret until Disney calls. “I have a lot of ideas, but I’m keeping them close to my vest so, if they ever come and I’m grateful enough for them to call, I can share all my crazy ideas,” he also told the publication.
Leitch isn’t the only one concerned about the future of Deadpool. Josh Brolin, who played Cable in Deadpool 2, doesn’t know if he’ll return for another round. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m actually, I’ve been calling them, like, ‘What’s the deal with Cable, man?’ Seriously, 100 percent serious. They’re figuring it out. It’s a big world now, it just got much, much bigger. So who knows,” he said during an ACE Comic Con Seattle appearance. Brolin recently finished a four movie stint as Thanos. An appearance as Cable would make him one of few actors to play two characters in the MCU. Other actors to play two different roles include Paul Bettany (J.A.R.V.I.S. and Vision) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Strange and Dormammu).
While promoting Deadpool 2, Ryan Reynolds said Deadpool 3 would be different from its predecessors. This could mean the upcoming film will be mainly about the X-Force. “For Deadpool 3, you know, it’s an odd thing to say but I don’t think there will be a Deadpool 3. I think going forward it would be an X-Force movie, which would be his team, so to speak,” he told Starnews Korea.
Daddy Needs To Express Some Rage
Before the acquisition, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that Deadpool would be part of the MCU despite its raunchy behavior. “There may be an opportunity for an R-rated Marvel brand as long as we let audiences know what’s coming,” he said in a 2017 press statement. Many folks assume a Deadpool TV show would do wonders over on Hulu. Over the years, Marvel Television has pushed the envelope with shows like Deadpool, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage.
Turning Deadpool into a TV series, however, would possibly mean Marvel Studios losing big money. Deadpool 2 earned a whopping $785 million worldwide at the box office. This made it the highest-grossing R rated film ever, beating out 2016’s Deadpool. With Deadpool’s entry in the MCU, Marvel Studios can expect another billion-dollar hit in their future. Bringing the character in, however, can be challenging with the current landscape. While many simply want the third film, they can sprinkle the character in other films with some jokes. Whatever happens, fans will be glad to see the Merc with a Mouth back in action soon. Let’s just hope Deadpool has enough chimichangas in hand for his next adventure.
