‘The Big Lebowski’ Spinoff ‘The Jesus Rolls’ Hits Theaters In 2020
Published on July 18, 2019
Fans of The Big Lebowski have been waiting a long time to hear about its spin-off The Jesus Rolls. Shot back in 2016, the film’s actual release date has been in movie limbo. Fortunately, fans will be able to see this movie early next year.
Time To Roll On
The Jesus Rolls will finally have its release with the help of distributor Screen Media Films. “It feels like a good time to release a transgressive film about the stupidity of men who try and fail and try better to understand and penetrate the mystery of women. I look forward to working with Screen Media and bring our work and the character of the Jesus to American audiences,” director John Turturro said in a press release.
Founded in 2001, Screen Media Films has distributed movies such as The Man Who Killed Don Quixote and The Temple. They’ve also distributed Turturro’s 2014 film Rio, I Love You. “It’s an honor to be working with John Turturro again. His passion for storytelling and character building is unparalleled, so it goes without saying that people should be excited for the Jesus,” said Screen Media Films senior VP of acquisitions Seth Needle in the same press release.
Return Of The Dude
2019 was a surprising year for The Big Lebowski, and it’s all thanks to the Super Bowl. Jeff Bridges reprised his role of The Dude for a Stella Artois commercial. The ad also features Sarah Jessica Parker reprising her role as Carrie Bradshaw. “There will be a lot of men drinking during the Super Bowl, so why not buy some beer that’ll do some good for the planet and the world,” Bridges told The Associated Press. The ad was part of the Pay It Forward campaign, which donates water to underdeveloped countries.
Unfortunately, The Dude won’t be a part of the forthcoming spin-off movie. The Coen brothers, who directed The Big Lebowski, gave Turturro permission to only use his character. For years, Turturro wanted to do something bigger with Jesus. “The only reason I wanted to make—well, not a sequel, but a spin-off or something. Joel and Ethan don’t really want to do it, but if I can get them to approve my outline, which I think they liked…. Anyway, the only reason I wanted to do it was so that people will stop asking me questions about The Big Lebowski. So I could just get it out and do it and finish it. Because people are obsessed with the movie and obsessed with that guy,” he told The A.V. Club back in 2011. For its 20th anniversary, The Big Lebowski was given the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray treatment.
Jesus Is Going Places
The Jesus Rolls finds Turturro reprising his role of Jesus Quintana for some misadventures. The movie serves as both a spin-off of The Big Lebowski and a remake of the 1974 film Going Places. The film was actually going to be titled Going Places before landing its final title.
Joining Jesus as his sidekicks are Petey (played by Bobby Cannavale) and an unnamed character played by Audrey Tautou. Susan Sarandon will be playing an ex-con that’s returning back to society. Pete Davidson, Jon Hamm, Sonia Braga, Nicolás Riera, and J.B. Smoove round out the cast. Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, New Element, and Tribus P Films will produce the film. French composer Émilie Simon will take care of the film’s score. This will be her second title penning music for a movie. In 2005, she worked on the soundtrack for La marche de l’empereur (b.k.a. March of the Penguins). Fans can expect a trailer for the movie in the near future.
