Teaser Trailer For ‘Joker’ Takes Fans On A Ride
Published on April 25, 2019
Iconic Batman villain The Joker gets the spotlight with Todd Phillips’ Joker film. Separate from the DCEU, the film follows comedian Arthur Fleck in his transformation into the diabolical criminal. With the film dropping later this year, the studio decided to drop a teaser trailer to hype it up.
Not His First Choice
For actor Joaquin Phoenix, Joker is right up his alley. Years ago, the actor was offered the roles of The Hulk and Doctor Strange in the MCU. He declined those gigs because of the multi-picture contract attached to them. Phoenix wanted to do a deep origin story about a comic book character. Joker wasn’t on his radar, though.
“Three or four years ago, I called my agent and said ‘Why don’t they want to take one of these characters and just make a lower budget film about it, a movie but a character study, and why not take one of the villains?’ And I thought, ‘You can’t do the Joker, because, you know, it’s just you can’t do that character, it’s just been done,'” he told Collider.
Watching And Waiting
When Phoenix was cast as Joker, many fans thought it was the perfect fit. Like any actor tackling an iconic role, he had butterflies in his stomach.
“When you get a script, obviously, the writer— usually for me, it’s the writer/director, last several years I’ve worked with a filmmaker that was the writer and director— and they have their expectation, and they’ve imagined things in their head, and they’ve imagined different actors, and suddenly you take it on and so there’s this moment of anxiety of ‘Did I live up to their expectations?,’” he also told Collider.
Check Back In July?
Unlike most comic book films, Joker was filmed with a small budget of $55 million. Aside from Phoenix, Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy will star in the film. With San Diego Comic Con coming this summer, fans can expect to hear more information regarding Joker.
