‘Stranger Things 4’ Teaser Trailer Could Confirm Hopper Is Actually Alive

Published on October 17, 2019

Netflix/IMDb

Everyone’s favorite supernatural, science fiction thriller is returning for another season. Stranger Things announced on Sept. 30 that the hit Netflix original series was officially picked up for a fourth season. Fans were immediately thrilled at the news, but they have one major concern: Is Hopper really dead? Warning: Spoilers ahead!

All About Season 3

Stranger Things 3, released on July 4, was an emotional roller coaster. The kids (Mike, Eleven, Dustin, Lucas, Will, and Max) are now teenagers and Hawkins, Indiana changed due to a new supernatural force. In addition, Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Hawkins Chief of Police Jim Hopper (David Harbour) team up to investigate the local corruption, particularly against the Russians occupying Hawkins.

The teenagers and adults eventually work together to combat the supernatural forces and the Russians. Are they successful? Yes, but it comes at an unfortunate price with the potential loss of Hopper. Everyone’s favorite police chief supposedly died when Joyce had to close the “gate” to the Upside Down, purportedly dying by electrocution. However, some fans aren’t convinced. After all, they never saw his dead body. As we know, if we don’t see a dead body, the person isn’t necessarily dead.

About The Post-Credits Scene

Prior seasons of Stranger Things haven’t featured a post-credits scene, but creators Matt and Ross Duffer decided to give fans an extra twist. The scene took place at a military base in Kamchatka, Russia. A group of Russians was walking through closed doors to select their next victim. One of them approaches a door, but his partner says, “No, not the American.”

Fans dissected this scene. Who could the American be? Is it Hopper? Or, is it someone else entirely? Regardless, they’re more than ready to receive answers. It turns out the teaser trailer for the show’s fourth season might have provided all the clues fans need to confirm their theories: that perhaps Hopper really isn’t dead after all.

Is Hopper Alive?

Fans rejoiced when they heard Stranger Things is returning for a fourth season. But after watching the teaser trailer, fans also had their questions. The announcement delivered a cryptic video and message: We’re not in Hawkins anymore. But what does this mean?

Fans dissected the video, suggesting that Hopper may have actually entered the “gate” to the Upside Down before it closed. The video shows a version of Hopper’s cabin in the Upside Down. A light is turned on, which could mean Hopper is suffering in the Upside Down. He’s waiting for help.

One Twitter user (@lightsupelmax) believes they saw a living person in the video. Could this be Hopper? Another user (@notearstroian) explained that the clock in the video and in the show’s official social media profile picture relate to the letter Hopper left for his adopted daughter, Eleven, before his death. The user says, “So, in Hopper’s letter in the finale, he says he wishes he could ‘turn back the clocks.’ What if Eleven goes back in time…to save…Hopper…but…can’t…save…herself.”

The video’s caption, “We’re not in Hawkins anymore,” also suggests that the next season could be moving away from Hawkins, Indiana. Could the season focus more on the Upside Down? Or, the season could focus entirely on Eleven, Joyce, Will (Noah Schnapp), and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), who have now moved away from Hawkins. Maybe they have to work together to save Hopper, but will it come at an unfortunate price?

A release date for Stranger Things 4 hasn’t yet been announced. But whenever the new season is released, we’re confident fans will stream it in one sitting (like they did with the third season) and hope Hopper is actually alive. We weren’t prepared to say goodbye to our lovable police chief. But until then, like Hopper instructed Eleven, we’ll leave the door open three inches for him.
