David Harbour Promises ‘Stranger Things 3’ Will Have ‘Big, Big Surprises’
Published on April 18, 2019

In March 2019, Netflix revealed the first trailer for the third season of its popular supernatural series, Stranger Things. As promised, one summer could change everything. Recently, David Harbour (Chief Hopper) commented that the next season will “slap you in the heart” and have “big, big surprises.” What does he mean by that?
“We’re Not Kids Anymore”
In the new season, Stranger Things takes place in the summer of 1985. But it certainly won’t be an average summer for the characters, who must grapple with supernatural forces. The trailer also shows them tackling something else: becoming teenagers.
Finn Wolfhard’s character, Mike Wheeler, says in the trailer, “We’re not kids anymore.” The kids everyone fell in love with are growing up, and that might be a harsh reality for some fans.
Getting More Into The ‘80s
The trailer features multiple references to the 1980s, everything from the music (Mötley Crüe’s’s “Home Sweet Home”), clothing, jazz aerobics, and more. For fans who grew up in the ‘80s, they will certainly appreciate the new season. They’ll time travel right back to their childhoods.
Harbour adds, “[The new season] is bigger. We get even more ‘Spielbergian’ in our aesthetic. It’s got a lot of color to it this year. We really get into the ‘80s more; it’s ’85, Hopper has a whole new getup. He’s got a mustache. We’re leaning into it in a really fun, interesting way.”
Summer Of Love
Everyone already knows Mike and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) are an adorable couple. But are they the only couple featured in the new season? Will Chief Hopper and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) finally date? Show creators Matt and Ross Duffer described the next season as “the summer of love.” Harbour agrees with this statement.
“It’s got a lot of love, and it always has from the very beginning,” he said. “That’s the thing that’s very special about the show. It has tremendous heart. I always get choked up when I watch it, and this season is no different. It takes a lot of risks, but in its essence, it’s going to smack you in the heart. It’s really fun and it’s really beautiful and there are some big, big surprises.”
What could be the biggest surprise of the new season? You can find out on July 4 when season three hits Netflix.
