One Classic ‘Star Wars’ Character Could Appear In ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

Published on July 13, 2019

Star Wars fans have been counting down the days until The Rise of Skywalker. With Lando returning, many fans have been wondering who else might make a comeback. One name that has been on some people’s lips has been Lobot.

Nice Wristcom, Lando

Twitter user CadBanesBounty noticed something while watching the trailer for the forthcoming film. Lando seemed to be wearing his wristcom. “I had to lighten the VF pic, but is Lando wearing his wristcom from ESB? There’s no way Lobot is in #TheRiseofSkywalker, is he?,” CadBanesBounty stated. His tweet quickly went viral, and many Star Wars fans were intrigued at this discovery. “No one is ever really gone! Could be. Maybe he’s the gunner,” Twitter user UtinniUtinni stated. As expected, some people believe this is meaningless. “No. I’m sorry, everyone, but the universe doesn’t love me enough for this to be true. Sorry to ruin it for all of you,” Twitter user Rheiret said.

Domo Arigato Mr. Loboto

Lobot first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back as Lando’s cyborg companion. The character was slated to die in the film, but they cut his death scene from the finished product. They also nixed plans to have him return in Return of the Jedi. The character was recently featured in the pages of Marvel Comics’ Star Wars titles.

Lobot was portrayed by British actor John Hollis. Aside from Star Wars, he was best known for his work in the Superman film series. When it comes to his role, Hollis famously said, “If you’ve got a part where you’re walking around with lights flashing on your head, you can’t really fail, can you?”

Following 1999’s Esther, Hollis retired from acting. In 2005, he passed away at 77. This hasn’t stopped Lucasfilm from using CGI to recreate a character. In Rogue One, Grand Moff Tarkin made a surprise appearance. Peter Cushing, who played the character in A New Hope, passed away in 1994. To recreate him, they digitally mapped his face onto actor Guy Henry. “We look at human faces all day every day, so people are very tuned to seeing anything that looks off. This work was done with great affection and care….the role we gave Tarkin in his film is one that Peter Cushing would’ve been very excited and happy to play,” Rogue One executive producer John Knoll told Nightline.

Lobot In Disguise

There could be a possibility of Lobot dying between The Empire Strikes Back and The Rise of Skywalker. If that happens, Lando could have another robot friend that’s introduced in the new film. A Lobot appearance would be a great way to enhance the ending of the Skywalker saga. Closing an iconic nine film saga means bringing several throwbacks for longtime fans.

The Rise of Skywalker will include another familiar character from the series: Palpatine. Ian McDiarmid will return to reprise the role. Plans for a Palpatine return didn’t spring up overnight. “This has been in the blueprint for a long time, yeah. We had not landed on exactly how we might do that, but yes, it was always [to be in Episode IX],” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told Yahoo. The character appeared to have died at the end of Return of the Jedi. There’s no word if Palpatine is actually alive or if he’s a spirit.

Aside from familiar faces, The Rise of Skywalker will include a few new ones to the franchise. Keri Russell will portray masked rouge Zorri Bliss while newcomer Naomi Ackie will play Jannah. Dominic Monaghan has also been cast in an undisclosed role. The Rise of Skywalker will hit theaters worldwide on December 20, 2019.
