Sophie Turner Could Play Boy George In A Biopic

At only 23 years old, Sophie Turner has become an international superstar thanks to Game of Thrones. With the recent release of Dark Phoenix, she looks to be done playing Jean Grey. Fortunately, she may have the role of Boy George in her sights.
Admiring From Afar
Boy George talked to Australian radio show Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa about his forthcoming biopic. When asked about who he’d want to portray him, Turner was on his mind. “There’s been some really interesting suggestions. One of the most interesting suggestions was Sophie Turner. [People will say] ‘she can’t play you she’s a woman,’ you know. But when I was 17, I would have loved to have been her,” he said.
Turner noted the interview and unofficially accepted the job. “I’m so down,” she tweeted. Fans were also on board with this casting idea. “How did we all not see this earlier? I feel like this is something we didn’t know we needed! You were meant to play this role!! And that’s the tea!!!,” Twitter user jdigiorno said.
It’s Happened Before
This wouldn’t be the first film based on George’s career. In 2010, BBC2 unveiled the film Worried About the Boy, which had Douglas Booth portraying the singer. For Booth, meeting the singer was an unreal experience. “I remember the first time he visited set was about halfway through filming. By that time, I had really become this character. I was working so hard, so there was no time to go out or become me at the end of the day. It was: get home, sleep, wake up, be the character; I was actually living the character for the period we were shooting it. I remember being genuinely confused about how Boy could be on the other side of the room, while I was standing there. It was like looking at my future,” he told Harper’s Bazaar.
George found himself satisfied with the end result. “I watched it on my own to start with. I don’t know what I was expecting it to be and I thought I might be horrified but it really made me laugh. I’m not particularly precious about the past anyway so I was never going to lose any sleep over it,” he told BBC. Costume designer Annie Symons won for Best Costume Design at the BAFTA Awards and the Royal Television Society Awards.

Bringing Boy George’s story to the big screen is perfect today. Biopics based on musicians have been a hot commodity in Hollywood lately. 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody became a box office success with $903 million earned. The film gained numerous accolades, including Best Actor at the Oscars. Rocketman, which was released in May, also gained a slew of positive response from fans and critics. Many people are expecting Taron Egerton, who plays Elton John, to earn accolades for his performance.
Netflix also got into the biopic game with The Dirt, which was released in March. Nearly 10 years after playing George, Booth found himself taking the role of Motley Crue’s bassist Nikki Sixx. Later this year, Judy, which is based on Judy Garland’s music career, will be released. Renée Zellweger will play the iconic star.
For Turner, portraying George would be a complete 180 from her recent roles. With the singer lobbying for her, it could easily be a possibility. On her slate, the English actress is working on the thriller Heavy and war drama Broken Soldier. With the end of Game of Thrones, we can bet she’ll be looking for more movie roles in the future. George will certainly have Turner’s number on speed dial.
