Why Ryan Gosling And Rachel McAdams Really Broke Up

Published on June 18, 2019

The Notebook is one of the best romantic films of all time. Everyone dreams of a relationship like Noah and Allie’s. But during the filming, stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams had a real-life relationship. Everyone loved them, so when they broke up in 2007, it was devastating. So, what happened?

The Perfect Love Story

In The Notebook, Noah and Allie have a perfect relationship. So, when it was announced Ryan Gosling (Noah) and Rachel McAdams (Allie) were in their own relationship, fans were delighted. They couldn’t get enough of the pair. Fans wanted the couple to stay together forever, but that didn’t happen. Too many pressures affected the relationship. Eventually, they broke up and fans felt like Noah and Allie had also broken up. It was the end of a fairytale romance, but according to the couple, their relationship wasn’t picture perfect.

Opposites Attract

Gosling and McAdams’ relationship is the definition of “opposites attract.” They had undeniable chemistry, but they didn’t always see eye-to-eye while filming The Notebook. Director Nick Cassavetes knew the stars were perfect for the movie (and maybe he spotted the fiery attraction between them off-screen) and he asked them to talk about their frustrations. After a long conversation, Gosling and McAdams finally understood each other and before they knew it, they were a couple. They were like Noah and Allie, but unlike their characters, they didn’t stay happy.

Fans Were Too Involved

It’s hard enough to be in the spotlight, but to have your relationship on public display has to be stressful. Considering The Notebook was one of the most popular movies in 2004, fans wanted Gosling and McAdams to stay together forever. But unfortunately, the adoration put too much pressure on the couple’s relationship. They knew they couldn’t live up to everyone’s expectations. So, when they finally broke up, they knew they disappointed fans. Gosling remarked in 2007, “Women are mad at me. A girl came up to me on the street and she almost smacked me.”

Too Much Show Business

It’s not just the fans that got in the way of the relationship, but show business itself created complications. Gosling claimed show business was the bad guy in their relationship. When both people in the relationship are in show business, it’s too much show business. When they’re both in the spotlight, nothing else can grow. They’re both followed by paparazzi, busy filming movies, and their schedules never align. It’s hard to have a relationship when two people are never in the same place.

She Wasn’t His Soulmate

Like most couples, Gosling and McAdams ultimately broke up because they knew they weren’t “the one” for each other. They weren’t supposed to be together. If they were, they would still be dating today. They would have the perfect love story like Noah and Allie, who are soulmates. But luckily, Gosling has since found his soulmate in his current partner of eight years—actress Eva Mendes. The mother of his two daughters, Mendes is the person Gosling is supposed to be with, according to the actor. He isn’t looking for anything else.

Better Off As Friends

While it’s never easy to end a relationship, Gosling and McAdams’ breakup was completely mutual. They both understood their complications and that the relationship wasn’t for the best. They were better off as friends. But since their breakup, the couple has had nothing but nice things to say about their former lover and on-screen partner. The breakup wasn’t ugly, which is comforting to fans.

Many years have passed since their 2007 breakup, but Gosling and McAdams are still friends today. In fact, McAdams allegedly called Gosling for advice during her breakup with actor Michael Sheen. She also congratulated him on becoming a father. So, even though they aren’t together anymore, we can still cheer for their friendship. But if you want to see a romance between them, it looks like you’ll have to watch The Notebook. Noah and Allie will always love each other.
