Here’s Everything You Missed From “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 11 Finale

Published on June 18, 2019

The season finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 11 left us both shocked and satisfied as Yvie Oddly was crowned America’s Next Drag Superstar. Yvie’s daring, avant-garde drag style and free spirit certainly earned her the top spot, however there was much more that went on behind the scenes that fans wish they could have seen. Sources from ET have spilled the tea on the season 11 finale, and it’s nothing less than you’d expect from the loudest and best queens on television. Here’s what happened during the final filming of season 11 at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.

Fans Were Most Disappointed About Vanjie

Live filming for the season 11 finale happened before the final four had been revealed on television, so it was judge Michelle Visage’s sad duty to inform the audience who didn’t make it. When Visage announced that Vanessa Vanjie Mateo had not been chosen to enter the final four, the crowd unanimously replied with echoing of boos and cries of disappointment. Visage joked that it was her final outfit, the leopard print bodysuit that did her in: “I’m telling ya, those f**king bathing suit leotards are cursed.” Fans continued to support Vanjie throughout the episode, chanting her name and cheering every time she appeared. Fans may have been disappointed to not get to see her in the final four, but in the end, they were satisfied with who was crowned the winner.

Lip Syncs Are Harder Than We Thought

Contestants Brooke Lynn and Silky Nutmeg Ganache did a fantastic lip sync battle to the classic Destiny’s Child song “Bootylicious” for the finale. After they were done, Brooke ran over to hug Silky, and they shared a sweet moment together as their time on RuPaul’s Drag Race came closer to an end. However, their touching moment of friendship became a big mess when Silky’s makeup rubbed off onto Brooke’s shoulder. They had to regroup and redo most of their makeup before returning to filming. In the end, this wasn’t truly an issue, because each bit takes several hours of filming to get footage of the performers, RuPaul, and the audience. Eureka O’Hara and Kennedy Davenport actually did their lip sync twice in front of the live audience, so that the cameramen could capture RuPaul’s reactions as well as the audience’s. Though we only got to see one performance, they used footage from both takes to enhance the home viewer’s experience with cheering from the crowd.

The Final Moments Were Difficult To Capture

Because filming takes place in front of a live audience, RuPaul has the camera crew film both finalists’ crowing moments. This not only gives RuPaul more time to decide, but it also leaves the finale to mystery until the episode airs on T.V. ET was able to watch the crowing of runner up Brooke Lynn, and reported her final words on the show would have been, “No doubt aboot it now, the queen of the north is here, bitches!” However, we got to see Yvie Oddly give one last inspirational message to the oddballs and freaks out there, which was both touching and in character with her time on the show. Yvie told E.T. before the final episode aired how she would feel about winning the competition: “It would be really validating because a lot of what I do and a lot of what my art stands for isn’t about perfection and polish. I feel like it would really show— not only the kids, but more importantly, show me — that you don’t always need to have the most connections, the most money. You just need to have a really strong, clear point of view and be authentic to who you are.” This sentiment is absolutely beautiful and would have been perfect for her final moments onstage. However, they had to do two takes of her crowning moment, because her first speech started with “Um, stay odd. And does anyone have a baby I can eat?” That may have been even more in character for Yvie, but we’re glad they stuck with a more inspirational message.
