Ruby Rose Reveals She Was Nearly Paralyzed Following ‘Batwoman’ Stunt

After playing a supporting role on other shows, Ruby Rose will finally get the lead in The CW’s Batwoman. The forthcoming show has been highly anticipated by longtime fans of the Arrowverse. But with filming anything action-oriented, accidents can happen in an instant. The actress horrifyingly learned this firsthand when she was nearly paralyzed following a stunt gone wrong.
A Severe Spinal Injury
On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Rose talked about the forthcoming show. Much like the other Arrowverse shows, Batwoman requires a plethora of stuntwork. Unfortunately, one stunt left Rose injured. “I did a stunt, and for, like, a very extended amount of time, like, seven hours. We thought that I had broke a rib or just fractured a rib and that it was, like, 6 to 12 weeks of healing. So, then I had 6 to 12 weeks of chronic pain and just sort of kept assuming that was what it was,” she said on the show. During this time frame, Rose had trouble doing normal things such as sleeping and turning her head.
A visit to the doctor revealed some shocking news to the actress. Rose was working with two herniated discs in her spine. Another bad stunt could’ve left her paralyzed. “I wasn’t paying attention to my body. I wasn’t listening. I was in such a hurry to get things done. It was like, ‘Batwoman, yes! And, now I’m going to do this film. I’m going to come back, we’re going to pick up the series…’,” Rose also said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “I think [the injury] was the world’s way of saying, ‘You’re going to have to pay attention and you’re gonna have to slow down—and you’re not actually a superhero.”
Wearing Those Battle Wounds
Rose isn’t the only member of the Arrowverse to find themselves injured on set. Arrow star Stephen Amell has seen his fair share of injuries. While filming season 5, the actor nearly broke his nose after getting kicked in the face. For Amell, broken noses are part of his job. “I break a stunt guy’s nose every year,” he joked in a Q&A video. Fortunately, the actor buys beer for these hard-working stunt guys after every accident.
Legends of Tomorrow actor Dominic Purcell suffered a head injury on the set of Prison Break. An iron bar landed on his head after falling from a set-piece. “The accident was shocking, more than anything else. I mean, it was a scene where I was running into the prison, and I felt this extraordinary explosion on my head that I’d never experienced,” Purcell told Deadline. “It wasn’t like someone was slowly cutting my arm kind of pain; it was this sudden explosion. I dropped to my knees, and I was in shock.”
Her Time Is Now
Rose will continue promoting the forthcoming Batwoman series, which debuts on October 6. The show also features Meagan Tandy, Rachel Skarsten, and Dougray Scott. In the show, Batwoman has to protect Gotham City following the disappearance of Bruce Wayne. Batwoman is being developed by Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti and Caroline Dries, who worked on The Vampire Diaries. As expected, the show will be a major part of the forthcoming Arrowverse crossover “Crisis On Infinite Earths.”
After Batwoman’s debut in the Arrowverse crossover “Elseworlds,” Rose is ready to take on this important role. “I’m so excited to be doing it. I wish there was a show like this when I was growing up. I wish I had more representation on TV, film, media growing up, and I just didn’t. And now it’s fantastic that I can look around and see so many shows that I feel represented on,” she told Variety.
