Many fans of the DC universe are excited to see Ruby Rose take the lead as Batwoman (aka Kate Kane) on The CW this fall. At a recent event, Rose shared that the storyline of the show is not only entertaining but inclusive and diverse. In fact, she believes her character will make a positive change in the lives of others.

Saving Gotham

On the upcoming show, Batwoman will take over the role of Gotham’s savior as her cousin Batman (Bruce Wayne) has been missing in action for the past three years. In the first season of the show, Batwoman will be trying to step out of the shadow of her more famous cousin and bring villains to justice on her own. Of course, she can’t do it alone. Batwoman will have her own support team. Sophie Moore (played by Meagan Tandy), is a military school graduate turned private security specialist who falls for Kate. Camrus Johnson will play Luke Fox, son of the famed Lucius Fox of Wayne Technologies. Nicole Kang is Mary Hamilton, Kate’s bright and bubbly step-sister who is sympathetic towards the less fortunate in Gotham. With this team of people behind her, Kate is able to battle evil masterminds in the city.

Making An Impact

Batwoman will still be portrayed as a lesbian (as in the original comics) and will have her own love interest in the character Sophie. For Rose, that storyline is one of importance and one that she believes will change lives. The actress recently spoke at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour and admitted that it was a struggle growing up as a part of the LGBTQ community. However, it was even harder not being able to see herself represented on the small screen. “When [I saw] how passionate they were, and they were yelling over the top of each other and finishing each other’s sentences…I was watching this ping-pong match thinking if they’re that invested in this and it makes them so happy,” she said of Batwoman and Sophie’s relationship. “It’s telling the story that I wish was on television when I was a kid. I believe there are going to be people that this changes their life.”

Crossing Over

Though the mystery of why Batman ran off will eventually be explained, don’t think that the superhero will be making an appearance on the show just yet. Showrunner Catherine Dries does not believe that the character will ever appear on the series. However, there is a camaraderie between Batwoman and Supergirl, who are aware of each other’s secret identities. This will open the door for Supergirl to appear on the show at some point during season one. Rose’s Batwoman and Supergirl (played by Melissa Benoist) previously came face to face in the Arrowverse crossover episode, “Elseworlds.” The CW is also planning a huge DC crossover event this winter which will connect five of its superhero shows, including these two female superheroes. The event, entitled Crisis on Infinite Earths will air in December and January. The story will kick off with the December 8 episode of Supergirl, then will continue on Batwoman December 9 and The Flash Dec. 10. It will wrap up with the episodes of Arrow and DC Legends of Tomorrow on January 14. This multi-show arc will feature characters from Black Lightning and Kevin Conroy will make a special guest appearance as Bruce Wayne from the future,” according to a network press release said. Batwoman will make its premiere on the CW on Sunday, October 6  at 8 pm with encore performances of the first episode Monday, October 7 at 9 p.m. and Tuesday, October 8 at 9 p.m.
