Robert Pattinson has been a household name since he first graced screens as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Though he has since portrayed a plethora of diverse characters, Pattinson claims that his Potter role inspired him to pursue a career in acting.

One Role 14 Years Ago Changed Robert Pattinson’s Life

When Pattinson first began to send audition tapes from his home in London to casting agencies, he wasn’t even sure that acting was his calling. Many tapes that he sent remained ignored which led to anxiety and hesitation to commit to the unpredictable life of an actor and make the inevitable move to L.A. However, based on his recent comments to the Hollywood Foreign Press, it was his Harry Potter role that pushed him to stick with it.

“I remember going to Tokyo for the first time and sitting in my room, looking out over the city and being like ‘How has this happened?’ It was really special and I really like that movie … I wouldn’t be acting if it wasn’t for that.”

Pattinson was only 17 when he landed the role of handsome Hogwarts student, Cedric Diggory, who competed alongside Harry Potter in the Triwizard Tournament. Diggory was both introduced and murdered within the fourth movie, but his character left his mark on the Wizarding World. Pattinson’s short-lived role remained poignant, not only in the story, but in the minds and hearts of his fans. This was one of Pattinson’s first formal acting roles, but his experience on the set left a stunning impact on his career’s trajectory as it caused him to fall in love with it in a way he had not experienced previously.

Pattinson Speaks Highly Of The Atmosphere On The Potter Set

In addition, Pattinson also revealed how different the feel of the set was in comparison to others that he has worked on, offering insight to how the kids were treated while working on the set.

“It was a really nice environment on Harry Potter. Even compared to movies I’ve done since, it was very protected, the way the kids were treated. I’ve watched movies where you see a kid who’s got their tutor and it doesn’t exactly seem like they’re really going to school. I mean, it’s just kind of [like] they are fulfilling a legal requirement. But in Harry Potter, it was like they were at school and they were kind of doing work at the same time.”

Pattinson has since revealed that during the months of filming, he would elect to spend as much time on set as possible, even on the days he wasn’t supposed to be working. Pattinson has always been vocal about how much the experience meant to him, and even mentioned that the role was “the reason [he] didn’t go to university.” Filming presented him with scheduling conflicts that eventually forced him to choose between continuing his education and pursuing acting.

Now, Pattinson Is Entering A New Era In His Career

It has been a wild ride for Pattinson since his work on Harry Potter. Following his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight films, Pattinson has elected to steer clear of Blockbusters and attempt to reinvent himself within the indie world. However, news has recently broken that Pattinson will be playing Batman in the story’s newest installment, and with the excitement that surrounds him, it is clear that he has great things ahead. As he enters the next stage of his career, it’s nice to see Pattinson acknowledge the magic that helped get him there in the first place.
