The much anticipated Little Mermaid film won’t see the big screens until 2020, but a live performance adaptation is scheduled for ABC this November. The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live! stars With Auli’i Cravalho as Ariel and Queen Latifah as her nemesis Ursula. Here’s what Queen Latifah has to say about the upcoming live musical and her hopes for this modern-day Disney Renaissance:
Queen Latifah Excited To Work With ABC On Live Little Mermaid Adaptation
To build hype for Disney’s live-action movie adaptation of 1989’s The Little Mermaid, ABC is putting on a live musical featuring several modern Hollywood stars. Queen Latifah has been cast as the wicked sea witch, and on her way to the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards shared with ET her excitement for the upcoming performance. In a brief interview with Keltie Knight, Queen Latifah shared, “It’s just been something that we’ve been working on for a while. It was perfect timing that it came together. I’m so excited to play Ursula. I can’t wait to see what spin Hamish [Hamilton] helps me put on this character.”
Queen Latifah Hopes Melissa McCarthy Will Share The Role
In the ET interview, Queen Latifah also mentioned her hopes to see Melissa McCarthy cast in the movie remake, which is set to begin filming soon. She mentioned, “I’m excited for Melissa McCarthy as well… I know there’s a lot of confusion but I love her, God bless her and we can definitely do a duet.” The only confirmed cast member for the Disney live-action movie is Halle Bailey, who will play Ariel.
However, rumors have circulated that McCarthy is in talks with Disney to play Ursula. McCarthy was tactful in her response to ET when asked about the Little Mermaid film. She said to ET with a coy smile, “Who’s Ursula?… But am I interested? I’m very interested.” By the way others in Hollywood and online are talking, Disney is also very interested in having McCarthy join the cast. Her reputation in the comedy space would certainly bring in many fans. Though McCarthy has yet to perform in a children’s movie, she would certainly make a great fit with her larger than life acting style.
2020 Is The Year Of The Little Mermaid
Melissa McCarthy isn’t the only one excited for a live-action Little Mermaid film. With the success of Disney’s recent live-action adaptations to their 90s films, fans can’t wait to see what they do with this aquatic fairytale. Rob Marshall, who directed Academy Award-winning Mary Poppins Returns will lead production for the new film. Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Lin-Manuel Miranda will be reworking original songs from the 1989 Little Mermaid, as well as writing new songs for the score.
With any luck, the film will see similar success to Disney’s live-action Aladdin and The Lion King films of 2019. Both films grossed over $90 million during opening weekend, pushing Disney to recreate even more of their 90s classics. No release date is set for The Little Mermaid, but Disney is hopeful it will be ready to premiere by 2020. In the meantime, we can enjoy Queen Latifah and other stars’ performances in the ABC live musical. The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live! is scheduled to air November 5th at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
