Pierce Brosnan On The First Female James Bond

Published on September 19, 2019

Pierce Brosnan has agreed that it’s been long overdue to have a female James Bond. The former 007—who starred in Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, and Die Another Day—certainly knows the demands of playing the iconic agent. If there will ever be a female James Bond, who will win the historic role?

James Bond Throughout The Years

People have been fascinated by James Bond since the fictional secret agent was created in 1953 by author Ian Fleming, who featured the iconic character in 12 novels and two short-story collections. In 1962, Sean Connery became the first actor to play James Bond in Dr. No, and he would famously play the character in five other films: From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, and Diamonds Are Forever. For one film in 1969 [On Her Majesty’s Secret Service], George Lazenby played the character.

In 1973, Roger Moore took over the role in Live and Let Die. He played James Bond for over 12 years, replaced by Timothy Dalton for two films [The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill]. Brosnan then played the character for seven years. In 2006, Daniel Craig was given the role for Casino Royale. He has played the role ever since, but he will ultimately walk away from the character in 2020 with the upcoming film, No Time to Die. To many fans, it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the modern James Bond but Craig. But it has to happen, and the next person to play Bond could be a woman. Are you ready for it?

James Bond Can Be A Woman

While it hasn’t officially been announced who will replace Craig as James Bond, people already have their speculations. Several actors, including Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, and Henry Cavill, have been rumored to be considered for the role. But Brosnan is most enthusiastic about the possibility of the next Bond being a female.

“I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years. Get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there,” Brosnan said. He’s completely on board for the first female James Bond movie. “I think it would be exhilarating. It would be exciting. Anything is possible.”

A Controversial Decision

The future for the James Bond franchise is up-in-the-air with several questions. Right now, it’s been reported that Captain Marvel actress Lashana Lynch will play the next agent in No Time to Die. But she isn’t replacing Craig as James Bond. Instead, it’s rumored that her character, Nomi, will be the replacement agent after Bond leaves MI6. She wouldn’t be referred to as James Bond, but instead her own character. Bond would no longer be associated with the franchise, which is hard to imagine for several fans.

If a woman is cast as the next “James Bond”-type agent, it would purportedly be a controversial decision. Audiences have been fans of the franchise since 1962, and they have grown accustomed to the image of James Bond being a suave ladies’ man. He has class and charisma. To many, a woman can’t replicate this tradition.

In fact, a former Bond girl, Valerie Leon, has expressed her opinion on the controversial subject. According to Leon, who starred with Moore in The Spy Who Loved Me and Never Say Never Again, the world would be better if they never saw a female James Bond.

“The world has gone mad. I’m dressed in black. I am in mourning that we’re here to talk about Bond being a woman,” Leon said. She added that author Fleming created the character as a man. “He was conceived as a man. He’s a fantasy. So many men have wanted to be Bond and women have wanted to be with Bond. How can people fantasize about a woman as Bond?”

The James Bond franchise has been successful since 1962, and Leon wonders why producers would want to change a franchise that has been so popular. But if a woman is cast as the next James Bond, it would be a way to add excitement to the franchise. Besides, a little change never hurts anyone.
