Paramount Pictures To Reboot Cage Action Flick ‘Face/Off’

Published on September 17, 2019

Kiss Them Goodbye

John Travolta and Nicolas Cage swapped faces and delivered insane fights in 1997’s box office hit Face/Off. The Oscar-nominated film became one of director John Woo’s most acclaimed movies. Now, the action-packed movie is getting the reboot treatment thanks to Paramount Pictures.

Only One Will Survive

Neal H. Moritz will produce the Face/Off reboot. The producer is best known for his work on the Fast and the Furious franchise. New York City native David Permut will be the film’s executive producer. Permut co-produced the original film alongside Barrie M. Osborne, Terence Chang, and Christopher Godsick. In 2016, his film Hacksaw Ridge gained an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

Oren Uziel will write the film’s script. He made his writing debut with the 2010 short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. His recent credits include The Cloverfield Paradox, 22 Jump Street, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Aside from Face/Off, Uziel will also work on Supergirl and Detective Pikachu 2. No director has been attached to the reboot.

Woo’s The Man

Face/Off almost didn’t have Travolta and Cage in the lead roles. Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were originally cast in the film. When director John Woo came on board, he replaced them with Travolta and Cage. At that point, Woo was one of the biggest names in Hong Kong cinema. In 1993, he tackled the American cinema with Hard Target, which stars Jean-Claude Van Damme. Three years later, he worked with Travolta in the action-thriller Broken Arrow.

Unlike his previous American films, Face/Off allowed Woo to deliver his unique style of filmmaking. “I’m really grateful to Paramount because they gave me so much freedom on this film…they let me do whatever I wanted to do because they like my style,” Woo told Venice Magazine. “Also because of the nature of the script, the script was exactly what I like to do with two very different characters, who also have something in common. There’s no real good guy or bad guy in my films. The film’s also about friendship and dignity and honor and family.”

Face/Off earned the director a Saturn Award for Best Director. This was his second Saturn Award nomination; he earned one in the same category for Hard Target.

It’s Like Looking In A Mirror

Many people have already named who they’d want in the Face/Off reboot. One pairing going around is Matt Bomer and Henry Cavill, who both portrayed Superman at one point. Bomer provided the voice of the popular DC superhero in the animated film Superman: Unbound. Cavill played a live-action version of the character in the DC Extended Universe.

If they plan on changing the gender, many want Margot Robbie and Jaime Pressly. Robbie has been compared to Pressly since her breakthrough performance in The Wolf of Wall Street. While Robbie has been in box office hits, Pressly is busy with television. She can be seen on the hit CBS sitcom Mom.

The two actresses met for the first time at the L.A. premiere of Robbie’s I, Tonya. As expected, fans were quick to notice their strong similarities. “Ok, so how am I just realizing that @MargotRobbie and Jamie Pressly are long lost sisters,” Twitter user yungenigma said. Some fans get confused while watching them on-screen. “Y’all Margot Robbie looks like Jaime Pressly when she was in My Name Is Earl, so in I, Tonya I kept thinking I was watching Jaime and it was Margot now I’m watching Mom with Jaime and I’m now in a weird universe where they look too alike,” Twitter user GalaxySpeed said.

Regardless of who’s in it, fans will be interested in seeing how the studio will handle the remake.
