With the X-Men heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one character fans want to see is Wolverine. Unfortunately, Hugh Jackman, who played the character since 2000’s X-Men, hasn’t been tapped to reprise the role. Fans already have the perfect replacement for the Australian actor in Danny DeVito.

The Trash Man Cometh

Back in May, a petition was launched to have DeVito play Wolverine in the MCU. “The only man able to take the throne after Hugh Jackman. We believe that if Wolverine is to make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that the only man able to pull it off is Danny DeVito,” the petition states. When it comes to the actor, his height is perfect for the Marvel character. “Danny DeVito’s height is a lot closer to the comic books portrayal of Wolverine. With Danny being 4’10” and Wolverine 5’3″,” the petition also states. At 6′ 2″, Jackman was too tall for some Marvel fans. Another reason why DeVito would be perfect involves his wrestling alter-ego on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. “We all saw Danny’s portrayal of the Trashman. So, we know he is fully capable of fighting, and that he is not afraid when things get dirty,” the petition states.

Never Forget The Penguin

DeVito’s first foray into comic book movies was in 1992’s Batman Begins. In the film, the actor played Oswald Cobblepot, who is better known as The Penguin. DeVito wasn’t the first choice to portray the character, though. The studio wanted Dustin Hoffman, but the actor passed on the role. Something many people remember about DeVito’s performance was the character’s black saliva. The actor came up with this addition on his own. “Basically, it’s kind of like mild mouthwash with food coloring in it. We had it in a jar with a nozzle on it. Before every scene, I’d squirt it into my mouth. Luckily the taste wasn’t that bad,” DeVito told The Hollywood Reporter.

As The Penguin, DeVito had to work with real penguins on set. Because penguins are comfortable in colder temperatures, things got chilly in an instant. “I’m the kind of guy that loves being on set, but it was cold as s–t because we had real penguins and they had to keep the water really cold. They had these massive air conditioners,” DeVito also told The Hollywood Reporter. Fortunately, DeVito kept warm because of heavy prosthetics and the iconic Penguin suit.

Will Marvel Studios Listen?

While Jackman made his final performance as Wolverine in Logan, he has been asked to come back. Ryan Reynolds has been begging Jackman to reprise the role for a Deadpool/Logan film. “Ryan is relentless. He keeps coming back to me in all these ways, shapes and forms, I just said, ‘You know, I just don’t think the world really wants to see Deadpool with Wolverine.’ Maybe a cameo from Deadpool? I just think it runs over it for Deadpool,” Jackman told People. Because Jackman has played the character for so long, Marvel might be cautious about a possible re-casting. They could write Wolverine off completely until Jackman can agree to a cameo appearance.

As of this writing, DeVito’s petition has over 55,000 signatures. Petition starter Ring Arius hopes it can reach 75,000 signatures in the following weeks. Fortunately, DeVito doesn’t have to sit around and wait for their decision. The actor will be busy promoting the forthcoming Jumanji: The Next Level, which drops on December 13. In the film, he portrays Spencer Gilpin’s grandfather Eddie. He’ll also be reuniting with Arnold Schwarzenegger for the Twins sequel Triplets. The film, which also stars Eddie Murphy, is still in early development.
