Olivia Newton-John Gets Popular ‘Grease’ Jacket Back From Auction
Published on December 31, 2019
One thing fans of “Grease” must remember is Olivia Newton-John’s stunning (and very tight) black jacket. Decades after the film’s release, this piece of clothing was placed in an auction to benefit cancer research. Fortunately, the Grammy-winning actress has reunited with this jacket thanks to one loving fan.
‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’
Newton-John recently auctioned off a plethora of “Grease” memorabilia through Julien’s Auctions. An unnamed buyer purchased the beloved black leather jacket for $243,200. But instead of keeping it, the buyer chose to surprise the actress by returning her iconic apparel to her. In a video posted by Julien’s Auctions, the fan met Newton-John to make the return. “This jacket belongs to you and the collective soul of those who love you, those for whom you are the soundtrack of their lives. It should not sit in a billionaire’s closet for country club bragging rights. For this reason, I humbly and respectfully return it to its rightful owner, which is you,” the buyer told Newton-John in the video.
As expected, the actress was shocked by the buyer’s gift. “You’re the best, you’re the best! I’m so grateful This is the most beautiful present, but mainly it’s your heart that I’m grateful for,” Newton-John said in the video. Other items sold were a signed poster, which sold for $64,000, and her Pink Ladies jacket, which gained $50,000.
‘You’re The One That I Want’
Before “Grease,” Newton-John was an established singer with two number-one albums in the U.S. at the time. Because of her accent, the character of Sandy was rewritten as an Australian native. When it came to landing the role, co-star John Travolta was a major supporter. “When I did the screen test for “Grease”—I asked if I could do one to see if I could carry it off, it’s probably the first time this has happened—I said, ‘If I don’t like myself, I won’t want to do the movie,'” Newton-John told Interview Magazine. “So, John did the test with me, and he was always saying, ‘You can do it, I know you can do it.’ He didn’t even know me, but he had seen me on television, and thought that I was the right girl to play the part.”
With many old films being revived lately, fans have been wishing for “Grease 3.” With everyone being much older, Newton-John is a bit skeptical about it working out. “I think it’s a bit late now. What would you do? Put us in a nursing home? I can’t imagine that working now but you never know what someone could come up with. If there was a great idea then, of course, we would consider it, or at least I would,” the actress told Forbes.
The Fight Continues
In 2018, Newton-John revealed her breast cancer returned for the third time. This prompted her to sell off her “Grease” memorabilia. “I’ve worn them and that was another part of my life, and now it can go to good use and someone can enjoy them,” Newton-John told “Good Morning America.” “I’m hoping it will end up in a museum somewhere so that people can see them in the future, but if not, a billionaire from China who wants it for his granddaughter…that’s fine too!” While choosing things to auction off, Newton-John admitted to wearing Sandy’s pants one more time. “I did, and I wasn’t going to tell anyone unless I could get in [them]! But thank goodness, at least my legs got in there!,” she also told “Good Morning America.”
The auction helped raise $2.4 million for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre. While the actress has to battle cancer for the third time, she’ll continue to have high hopes.
