Michelle Pfeiffer Wants Elle Fanning As Catwoman In Upcoming 2021 Film ‘The Batman’

Published on October 20, 2019

Now that Robert Pattinson is confirmed for the lead role in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film The Batman, everyone is turning their attention to speculating about the actors rounding out the supporting cast. One character fans are hoping appears in the film is Catwoman. Michelle Pfeiffer believes her Maleficent: Mistress of Evil co-star Elle Fanning could play the part.

Fanning’s Wearing The Suit?

While talking to Variety about Mistress of Evil, Pfeiffer was asked if she’d ever return to play Catwoman. “I would be surprised, but you, know, anything can happen,” she told the publication. When asked if Fanning would be great for the role, Pfeiffer told Variety, “She would be awesome.”

Fanning made her acting debut alongside her sister Dakota in 2001’s I Am Sam. This was also her first time working with Pfeiffer. Her performance in Super 8 landed the actress a plethora of nominations. Fanning will appear in the forthcoming films Molly and All the Bright Places.

You’re Catnip To A Girl Like Me

Pfeiffer’s portrayal of Catwoman in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns still gets praise today. The Oscar-nominated actress almost didn’t land the part. “As a young girl, I was completely obsessed with Catwoman. When I heard that Tim was making the film and Catwoman had already been cast, I was devastated,” Pfeiffer told The Hollywood Reporter. “At the time, it was Annette Bening. Then she became pregnant. The rest is history. I remember telling Tim halfway through the script that I’d do the film, that’s how excited I was.”

As expected, Pfeiffer didn’t have fun wearing the Catwoman suit on set. “It was the most uncomfortable costume I’ve ever been in. They had to powder me down, help me inside and then vacuum-pack the suit,” Pfeiffer also told The Hollywood Reporter. “They’d paint it with a silicon-based finish to give it its trademark shine. I had those claws, and I was always catching them in things. The face mask was smashing my face and choking me…we had a lot of bugs to work out.”

All About Kirby

With Catwoman, very few actresses are rumored for the part. Vanessa Kirby is one of the biggest names out in the open. The English actress is best known for her work in Netflix’s The Crown. The series landed her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Outside of television, Kirby has also made her presence felt on the big screen. In 2018, she appeared in Mission: Impossible – Fallout as Alanna Mitsopolis. This summer, she played Hattie Shaw in Hobbs & Shaw. When asked about the Catwoman rumors, Kirby was surprised about being mentioned. “Are you kidding?! I would love to be Catwoman. Oh my god, it would be a dream. I have to do lots of squats. I mean, literally, lots of squats,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

A Different Approach?

The Batman director Matt Reeves is rumored to want a POC or biracial actress to play the character. In the past, Eartha Kitt and Halle Berry both put on the Catwoman suit. Upon hearing news of this shift, fans have been tweeting their choices for Catwoman. “Natalie Martinez would be a phenomenal Selina Kyle/Catwoman in every way,” OpalSuds1990 said on Twitter. Martinez has been seen on CSI: NYUnder the Dome, and The I-Land. Others have their eyes on Naomie Harris, who earned accolades for her performance in Moonlight. “Naomie Harris is a very talented actress with an incredible range: from playing Tia Dalma in the Pirates series to Ms. Moneypenny in the Bond movies … and especially as Winnie Mandela. She also reminds me of a younger Eartha Kitt. She’d definitely rock that role,” QWBEnterprises said on Twitter.

Whoever plays Catwoman will join an elite group of actresses to don the suit. The Batman is set for released on June 25, 2021. This will be the beginning of a new Batman trilogy under DC Films. Filming is set to begin later this year in England
