Melissa McCarthy In Talks to Play Ursula In Disney’s Live-Action Film ‘Little Mermaid’

Published on July 15, 2019

If you remember the “Disney Rennaissance,” where all of our beloved princess stories originate, you are in for a treat. Disney is remaking many of their classic animated films into live action blockbusters. They’ve already released new versions of Aladdin, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Dumbo, Pete’s Dragon, and Beauty and the Beast. The debut of the live action Lion King is only a few weeks away, premiering in theatres July 19. Now, Disney is in the works for a modern rendition of everyone’s favorite love story under the sea, The Little Mermaid. Debuting for the first time in 1989, this classic may be one of the best of Disney’s live-action remakes of the 21st century.

Disney’s Live-Action Remakes Are Making A Splash

According to Variety, Disney is already in the works to make a live-action version of The Little Mermaid and has several cast members aligned for production this year. However, they first need to land contracts with several major stars to play Eric, Sebastion, King Triton, and of course, the malicious sea queen Ursula. Disney had no problem finding superstar casts for their other remake films. In the upcoming Lion King, Beyonce and Donald Glover will perform as Simba and Nala, while James Earl Jones will reprise his role as Mufasa. So far, Disney has cast Halle Bailey to play Ariel in The Little Mermaid live-action film. Film director Rob Marshall said, “After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance—plus a glorious singing voice—all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”  This will be the first time Disney has cast a person of color to play a traditionally white character in their live-action movies. With Halle Bailey on set, they need someone with equal talent and spirit to play Ariel’s counterpart, Ursula. The part of the evil sea witch is up for grabs, but Disney may have already snagged their top pick.

Does Melissa McCarthy Have The Chops To Play Ursula?

Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall will lead The Little Mermaid remake, with Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda revamping the score. They will include new songs and modern versions of the originals such as Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl. Marshall and execs at Disney have selected their top pick, Melissa McCarthy, to play Ursula. Rumor has it that she is already in early talks to sign a contract and become an official cast member. McCarthy would be a fantastic addition to the film. She has a vibrant acting style, and incredible reputation in Hollywood, and certainly the energy to fulfill such a major character. McCarthy has yet to make it big in any children’s film, so this will be a first for her.

Find Out The Little Mermaid Cast Soon

Ursula is one of the most beloved and hated villains in the Disney princess canon. She is bold, confident, and incredibly charismatic all while having genuinely terrible intent at heart. She backstabs, tricks, and lies her way through almost every situation, until her anger proves to be her own demise. Melissa McCarthy may not have starred in similar roles to this one, but fans believe she could be just the right person to bring out Ursula’s larger than life personality and style. McCarthy has in the past played primarily in comedies. She made quite the impression in Gilmore Girls, Mike & Molly, and Samantha Who? as well as in her many appearances on Saturday Night Live and supporting role in Bridesmaids. This may be the first time McCarthy plays the outright villain, but she will certainly turn the role into something magical. There is no release date yet for the film, but Disney will likely share as soon as they have their A team cast lined up.
