Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ Is A Whopping 3.5 Hours Long

Published on September 9, 2019

Martin Scorsese fans can’t wait until his new film The Irishman gets released on Netflix. Those eager folks should stock up on snacks before checking it out, though. This star-studded film is slated to be three and a half hours long.

A Whole Lotta Movie

The running time was unveiled on the New York Film Festival website. The Irishman will have its world premiere at the festival on September 27. Scorsese will be on hand to deliver an introduction before screenings. On November 1, the film will have a limited theatrical release. Many believe this limited release will help draw Oscar buzz for The Irishman. Last year, Netflix gave Roma a limited release before hitting the service. The film gained 10 nominations at the Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress. Roma won for Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Cinematography.

At 210 minutes, The Irishman beats out Avengers: Endgame as the longest movie released in 2019.

Cast Of The Ages

Aside from Scorsese directing, The Irishman‘s cast packs a mean punch. Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci join forces for the first time together. This will be the fifth film starring both De Niro and Pesci. The two previously worked on Raging Bull, Once Upon a Time in America, Goodfellas, and Casino. The Irishman will be the fourth film featuring both De Niro and Pacino. They worked together on The Godfather Part II, Heat, and Righteous Kill.

The Return Of An Old Face

In 1999, Pesci retired from acting to continue his music career. Around that time, he released his sophomore studio album Vincent LaGuardia Gambini Sings Just for You. While he’s made appearances here and there, the New Jerseyan has been living a quiet life. Getting Pesci for The Irishman was tough. He declined the role many times from his friend Pacino. “It’s in his hands now and I know he’s making an effort. There will be a time when we have to start that so I know he’s having those conversations with Joe and still trying to get him on board,” producer Gastón Pavlovich told Collider in 2017.

Trying Something New

With The Irishman, Scorsese is back in familiar territory. The director has earned praise for crime dramas such as GoodfellasCasino, and Mean Streets. Before shooting, Scorsese stated this would be distinct from his previous movies.

“I think this is different, I think it is. I admit that there are – you know, Goodfellas and Casino have a certain style that I created for them – it’s on the page in the script actually,” he told The Independent in 2017. “Putting Goodfellas together was almost like an afterthought, at times I was kind of rushing, I felt I’d already done it because I’d played it all out in terms of the camera moves and the editing and that sort of thing. The style of the picture, the cuts, the freeze-frames, all of this was planned way in advance, but here it’s a little different.”

Looking Young, Guys!

One thing that’s getting people excited for The Irishman is the de-aging of the actors. In 2015, Scorsese and De Niro tried out the technology by recreating a scene from Goodfellas. “I really had no choice. The risk was there, and that was it. We just tried to make the film. After sitting on the couch for ten years […] we finally had a way,” Scorsese told Empire Magazine. The Irishman will follow the three actors during different decades.

With a $159 million budget, The Irishman is one of Scorsese’s most expensive films. Despite the long wait, Scorsese, De Niro, Pacino, and Pesci know they have another hit on their hands. The Irishman hits Netflix on November 27.
