What We Know So Far About Jordan Peele’s Candyman Remake

Published on July 2, 2019

Have you ever seen the 1992 film Candyman? The cinematic 90s horror movie tells the story of a woman who becomes obsessed with the legend of Candyman after researching it for her graduate studies. What happens next is incredibly twisted and delightfully horrifying. With Jordan Peele as the mastermind of the new Candyman sequel, fans will have a chance to relive the nightmare all over again. Find out what we know so far about Jordan Peele’s Candyman remake.

The Forbidden

If you haven’t seen the original Candyman, you’ve got to check it out before Jordan Peele’s release next year. Based on Clive’s Barker’s tale The Forbidden, the OG Candyman stars Tony Todd as a 19th-century ghost that’s out for revenge. When graduate student Helen Lyle starts digging deeper into the story of Candyman for her urban legends thesis, things start to go terribly wrong from there. Directed by Bernard Rose, the gritty film is set in the streets of Chicago and revolves around the fate of those who say Candyman’s name five times. An instant classic, Candyman earned more than $25 million at the box office at the time of its release. This supernatural thriller was also followed by two successful sequels, 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and 1999’s Candyman: Day of the Dead.

Farewell To The Flesh

20 years later, Peele is providing audiences a fresh take on the eccentric horror film. As the lead writer of the movie, Peele’s Candyman will be released as a standalone hit and a quasi-sequel to the original. So, if you’re new to the Candyman franchise, then the movie will still make sense without having seen the 1992 version. However, Candyman die-hards will be pleased with how the upcoming remake will integrate with the original. While we don’t know much for sure about Peele’s reboot, producer Ian Cooper shared that “What we’re doing with Candyman and how Jordan is crafting it on the page is going to be very exciting and rewarding to audiences that haven’t seen the original film as well as people who’ve seen the original film.”

Cooper continued, “In short, I think this will really fit in with what we’re doing with Us and did with Get Out in a way that will be circuitous.” Not only that, but Cooper also confirmed that the film will address the topic of “toxic fandom,” saying “we talk a lot about fans and the idea of appeasing fans and when you do that and how do you do that and when do you not do that. I think my issue with fandom is that it’s really problematic. It’s probably the most problematic thing facing the genre.”

Day Of The Dead

With much of Peele’s impending project remaining under wraps, we do know one thing for certain. The original Candyman, Tony Todd, has confirmed that he’ll be participating in the remake. Todd spilled the tea that “out of the blue, I got a phone call from Jordan Peele. We’re still waiting for the contract, but the way he explained it to me was that it’s gonna be applause-worthy moments. That’s his words. No matter what happens with that, it’s gonna just put renewed attention on the original.”

It’s also rumored that the film will be set in Chicago and begin production in summer 2019. Evidently, actress Teyonah Parris will star as an art dealer’s girlfriend whose partner is consumed by the myth of Candyman. Apparently, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will also join the star-studded cast in a mysterious part that hasn’t been revealed yet. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait forever to see Peele’s Candyman, since it’s anticipated to be released in 2020.
