Would James McAvoy Make A Good Villain As The Riddler In New Batman Flick?
Published on April 5, 2019
Since 2011, James McAvoy has been portraying Professor X in the X-Men films. With Dark Phoenix arriving, his time with the character may be coming to an end. That’s not stopping the Scottish actor from wanting another comic book movie role.
Riddle Me This
The actor decided to do an Instagram Live for his adoring fans. During the video, one fan asked which DC character he’d love to portray. McAvoy turned his attention to one of Batman’s greatest villains.
“The Riddler, maybe. Always liked him when I was growing up. I’ve always thought DC does really good bad guys,” he said. On the big screen, The Riddler hasn’t been seen since 1995’s Batman Forever. That film found comedian Jim Carrey wowing audiences as the bad guy. Carrey earned a nomination for Best Villain at the 1996 MTV Movie Awards.
Flame On, Dudes
McAvoy wouldn’t be the first person to tackle two iconic comic book roles. Before Captain America, Chris Evans was the Human Torch in 2005’s Fantastic Four and 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. In 2017, Evans joked about playing both characters in a possible Fantastic Four/Avengers crossover. “So who do I talk to about a Cap/Human Torch buddy comedy spin-off? I’m thinking Planes, Trains and Automobiles meets Parent Trap,” he tweeted.
Michael B. Jordan also played the Human Torch in Fox’s reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise. That film wasn’t well received from critics and audiences worldwide. Luckily, he gained praise for his performance of Killmonger in 2018’s Black Panther.
Come Together Right Now?
With the Fox/Disney merger, there’s no word yet if McAvoy will continue his role. In an interview with Yahoo, McAvoy talked about moving the X-Men into the MCU: “In the X-Men world, [superheroes] are ghettoized. They’re ostracized and they’re feared. Whereas in the Avengers world, they’re honored a bit more… and seen as heroes. We’re seen almost like immigrants that people are scared of in the world of mutants and humans. How do you resolve that [in the MCU]?” he said.
Dark Phoenix is slated to arrive on June 7, 2019.
