Why James Holzhauer Won’t Be On Jeopordy! This Week
Published on May 13, 2019
Jeopardy! is one of America’s most fun and exciting game shows of all time. Contestants race to answer trivia questions of all categories, and compete to win not only cash money but a chance to advance to the next round. James Holzhauer, a Las Vegas sports gambler and reigning Jeopardy! champ is breaking records and winning more than he knows what to do with. He has won 22 consecutive games and earned over $1,691,000. However, we won’t get to see Holzhauer this week.
Get Ready For The Teacher’s Tournament
We will still get to see Holzhauer compete in the regularly programmed Jeopardy! in just a few weeks. However, the game show is taking a break to air their ever-anticipated “Teacher’s Tournament,” where educators from across the country compete to win up to $100,000. Fifteen teachers from all different backgrounds and states are getting to vie for prize money to help their classrooms or enjoy their summer break this year. The Teacher’s Tournament will end on May 17, and Holzhauer will get to compete on the next episode, airing May 20. James hopes to continue on his winning streak and get closer to surpassing Ken Jennings’ 74-game record. Jennings is the current highest-winning Jeopardy! champ, with a record of $2,520,700 earned. Holzhauer has already beat the record for most winnings in one game at $131,127 (the second highest from another contestant was around $77,000). He feels confident he can take it all the way home and beat Jennings’ record in the next few weeks.
How Holzhauer Became So Successful
Holzhauer is obviously next-level intelligent, but it takes more than just brains to make it this far on a game show. Holzhauer doesn’t have particularly extensive education, with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois. However, he has great experience for game shows. Holzhauer has appeared on The Chase, where he set two show records, and 500 Questions in addition to Jeopardy! He uses a unique strategy coined “Forrest bouncing,” where he jumps around the categories to make it harder for opponents. This technique also helps him find Daily Doubles, which allows him to earn more. Holzhauer has hit 51 Daily Doubles and won 47 of them. Ken Jennings, the current record-holder for most Jeopardy! earnings, says, “It’s absolutely insane what he’s doing… he’s got these incredibly confident wagers. He’s maximizing money. He can make two or three times what any other player ever has with that same level of play, which again is top-shelf.” It seems even Jennings himself is wary of losing his title to Holzhauer, who has already surpassed the winnings Jennings had at 23 games. If he continues to win big, he will go down in history as the greatest Jeopardy! contestant of all time.
James Holzhauer Earns More For Jeopardy! And His Home Town
Since James Holzhauer has been on the show, Nielsen Ratings for Jeopardy! have increased by 11% across the U.S. In certain local areas, including his hometown, ratings have nearly doubled. His winning streak is sweeping the nation and has entranced trivia lovers of all kinds. However, James isn’t doing this just for the money. In fact, he’s planning to donate a large portion of his winnings to charities for displaced youth in Las Vegas. He has already donated $10,000 to the cause and received a key to the Las Vegas strip for his selfless giving. He is excited to give back to his community and improve the lives of kids across Illinois. To see more from Holzhauer, tune in on May 20th to watch him compete.
