What We Know About ‘It: Chapter 2’ From The Trailer

It: Chapter 1 was one of the most successful horror films of 2017. The Andrés Muschietti remake, based on the original Stephen King novel of the same name, created a terrifying, surreal, and immersive world where children must fight for their lives against a demonic shapeshifter. Pennywise, played by Bill Skarsgård, haunts the town of Derry and comes every 27 years to wreak havoc on the community. The kids of Derry — Beverly, Bill, Mike, Eddie, Ritchie, and Stanley— are now returning as adults to defend their town from Pennywise in It: Chapter 2. Here’s what we know so far based on the trailer from May 9th.

Who Is Mrs. Kersh And What Does She Reveal About Pennywise?

The trailer begins with an adult Beverly visiting her old childhood home. An older woman named Mrs. Kersh lives there now, and invites Bev in for a cup of tea. While Mrs. Kersh puts on some water to boil, Bev looks around and finds the poem that Ben wrote for her so long ago. As the two sit down for tea, Beverly’s interactions with Mrs. Kersh get weird. The old woman says to Beverly, “You know what they say about Derry? No one who dies here ever really dies.” She then stares at Beverly for an uncomfortable 10+ seconds before continuing the conversation. Mrs. Kersh disappears into a dark hallway to go fetch some cookies, while Beverly stands up to look around the house. She notices some strange things about the old woman’s home, including a photo of Mrs. Kersh’s father who the woman said was in the circus.

When Beverly looks closer at the photo, she notices the clown’s name in the circus was Pennywise. This is when Beverly realizes the old woman is not who she says she is. Mrs. Kersh asks her from behind the darkness of the hallway, “I was always daddy’s little girl. What about you? What about you? Are you still his little girl, Beverly?” She screams, “Are you?” then attacks Beverly in the nude, presumably in a demonic form. This short clip from the movie sets us up for a truly horrifying film.

What Else Does The Trailer Reveal?

The rest of the trailer includes short snippets from the movie and flashbacks from the first movie. A first watch of the trailer may not reveal much, but if you look closer you’ll notice several Easter eggs that set up the future film. For example, there are several hints before the attack that elude to the fact that Mrs. Kersh is actually Pennywise. When Mrs. Kersh first opens the door, you can tell it’s definitely Pennywise’s (Bill Skarsgård’s) voice. Beverly also notices flies buzzing around the apartment, which hint that something (or someone) in the apartment is rotting. As Beverly and Mrs. Kersh share tea, Beverly gags a little bit. This is a reference to the same scene in the Stephen King novel, where the tea is actually a hot brew of sewer waste. In the 1990 movie, it was blood.

In the second half of the trailer, they pass the barons (sewer system) and while they’re walking through the deserted town pass several missing person’s flyers. An adult Bill sees the hands of Georgie with his paper boat coming out of the sewer, to which he looks angry, not scared. You see the adult Beverly drowning in blood, and all the adults joining hands just as they did in the first movie to unite against Pennywise. All of these tidbits hint that Pennywise is coming back with a vengeance and that the Losers’ Club may not survive this time around.

Get Ready For Chapter 2

The new movie stars Jessica Chastain (Beverly Marsh), James McAvoy (Bill Denbrough), Isaiah Mustafa (Mike Hanlon), Jay Ryan (Ben Hanscom), James Ransone (Eddie Kaspbrak), Bill Hader (Richie Tozier), Andy Bean (Stanley Uris) and of course, Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise. You can watch It: Chapter 2 in theaters September 6, 2019.
