Julian Fellowes gained accolades as the creator of Downton Abbey. The hit show became the most successful British drama of all time. Following the Downton Abbey film, Fellowes will bring a new show titled The Gilded Age to HBO. The cast for this forthcoming series is filled with amazing talent.

Sister, Sister

Christine Baranski will portray aristocrat Agnes van Rhijn. The official character description states, “Agnes is a proud and stubborn aristocrat who will never accept that the world has changed and that ancient values are being replaced by new ones. She found herself penniless as her parents’ plantation was foundering, even before the war, but she managed to catch a husband just in time. Agnes has a son named Oscar, whom she worships, but her worship is not returned.” Baranski is best known for her work in CybillThe Good Wife, and The Big Bang Theory. In 1995, she won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Overall, the actress earned 15 Emmy nominations. Baranski can be seen on The Good Wife‘s spinoff The Good Fight.

Cynthia Nixon is set to play Ada Brook, who is Agnes’ sister. “Ada is another victim of the collapse of the old south, but unlike her sister Agnes, she never found a way to get out until it was too late, and she was forced back on her sister’s charity. She is not naturally confrontational, but she is capable of standing up for what she believes,” the character description states. Nixon is best known for portraying Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City. Aside from TV, she earned two Tony Awards for Rabbit Hole and The Little Foxes.

Love And Marriage

Amanda Peet will play Bertha Russell. “Bertha comes from the ordinary middle-class. She backed her instincts when she set out to catch her husband George, the son of a merchant family who has proved to be a financial genius. She is determined to use her money and position to break into a society that resists change at every turn,” the character description states. Peet is known for her work in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Togetherness, and Jack & Jill. She can currently be seen on Brockmire, which has been renewed for a fourth season.

Morgan Spector will be playing Bertha’s husband George. The character description states, “A classic robber baron of his own time, Russell is pleasant enough in company. He’s fond of his wife and his children, but utterly ruthless in business. He has already acquired millions, and billions will follow. In every challenge, George must win.” Spector is best known for his work on Friday Night TykesHomeland, and Suits. In 2019, he brought his Suits character Mayor Bobby Novak to its spinoff Pearson.

Years In The Making

The Gilded Age has been in development since 2015. The show was originally set to be released on NBC with a 2019 debut. In May, it was revealed HBO acquired the series with a 10-episode first season. “Given the opulent scope and scale of this richly textured character drama, HBO is the perfect home for The Gilded Age,” HBO programming chief Casey Bloys said in a press statement. “We’re all huge fans of Julian and I know I speak for Bob Greenblatt — who was involved in the development of this series while at Universal Television — when I say we’re thrilled to bring his undeniable genius to our viewers.”

The show follows families living in high-class New York in the 1880s. “The truth is, America is a wonderful country with a rich and varied history, and nothing could give me more pleasure than be the person to bring that compelling history to the screen,” Fellowes told TV Guide. Filming for the series will begin next year. No premiere date has been released yet.
