The long-awaited and highly anticipated sixth and final season of Game of Thrones is finally here. One of the most talked about aspects from the sixth season so far is Brandon Stark— or, more specifically, his ominous stare. Isaac Hempstead, the 20-year-old actor who plays Bran, recently had some interesting insight on it.

Bran Stark’s Signature Stare

It’s always interesting to learn about how actors get into their characters, especially in a show such as Game of Thrones where the characters they play are wildly different from who they are in reality. Many characters have a signature expression, voice, or personality trait they have to perfect. For Hempstead, it’s Bran’s trademark expression, which has recently piqued the interest of GoT fans.

The stare is incredibly strange. In the context of the show, it likely means something dark and twisted. But in real life applications, it seems so hilariously outrageous, so much so that it’s currently fueling an endless supply of memes on social media. Some even theorize that Bran went completely blind; why else does he seem to blankly stare at characters? Others believe he is able to see into the future, as if thinking and knowing something the viewers don’t, yet not speaking up? Hempstead recently went on the Jimmy Kimmel Show and, while there, touched on the infamous distant stare.

Call It Blind Talent

On Jimmy Kimmel, Hempstead explained that in real life he normally wears glasses, so when he does without them during filming he is ‘completely blind’. “I don’t have my glasses and I don’t have contact lenses,” Hempstead explained to Kimmel, “I need them to see.”

He went on to add that when his co-star Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark, commented on how his stare is so intense that it feels like he’s “staring into [her] soul,” he explained to her that the reason for it is simply because he is unable to see her. Now it’s a little more understandable how Bran’s expression is able to look like he is seeing someone while simultaneously seeing something else. We have the answer to Hempstead’s method; now all we need is the answer to whether or not Bran is able to see into the future. Unfortunately, fans will have to tune into the next episode (as if there was any question) to find out.

Seeing The Stark Storyline Unfold

Bran Stark’s storyline has been one of the most interesting ones to watch unfold over the course of the show. Since being pushed from the window and crippled by Jaime Lannister in the very first episode, to becoming the Three-Eyed Raven, there has been a significant amount of attention paid to his character – and its many changes.

While starting off a bit slow (in typical Game of Thrones fashion), the first couple episodes did a great job at building anticipation toward the Battle of Winterfell. Over the past two years, fans have had plenty of time to build their theories. And while there is no end to the number of guesses and conspiracies people have, one of the most popular and widely shared belief was that Bran was actually the Night King. Of course, this theory has since been proved wrong. But Bran as the Night King wouldn’t be the first time fans could’ve been right about a popularized theory. Long before the official reveal happened, fans theorized that Jon Snow was the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. At least that one turned out to be true, while the Night King’s story still left many wondering.

A Game Of Guessing

Although we now know that Bran is not the Night King, all fans can agree that there is something going on behind his eerie, empty stare. The big question fans need answering, though, is exactly what the reasoning for it is. Bran doesn’t seem to be too quick on offering up any concrete answers, either. He’s been quite difficult to get any straightforward answers from, save for his ominous quips.

Isaac Hempstead may chalk up his staring talents to something almost accidental, but there’s no denying his acting capabilities. Starting the show when he was only ten years old, Hempstead has grown up on Game of Thrones, so it will be interesting to see where his career takes him post-Winterfell. For now, we’re just eager and excited to finally see where his character ends up.
