Emma Watson Is Embracing The ‘Self-Partnered’ Life

Emma Watson has been making strides outside of acting. As an activist, she’s been at the forefront of many important issues. Something that rarely gets discussed publicly is her love life. While she’s happily single, she’s using another label for the situation.

The Only Partner She’ll Ever Need

In a recent interview with British Vogue, Watson talks about turning 30. For anyone, hitting the age brings a ton of pressure from all directions. Despite being a celebrity, Watson understands this all too well. “If you have not built a home, if you do not have a husband, if you do not have a baby, and you are turning 30, and you’re not in some incredibly secure, stable place in your career, or you’re still figuring things out… There’s just this incredible amount of anxiety,” she told the publication.

When it comes to her dating life, Watson is content with her current state. “I never believed the whole ‘I’m happy single’ spiel.’ I was like, ‘This is totally spiel.’ It took me a long time, but I’m very happy [being single]. I call it being self-partnered,” she also told British Vogue. In recent months, Watson has been rumored to be with Harry Potter co-star Tom Felton. In the past, Watson has dated rugby player Matthew Janney and financier Jay Barrymore.

The Phrase That Pays

The term “self-partnered” reminds people of Gwyneth Paltrow’s use of “conscious uncoupling” in 2014. While announcing her split from Chris Martin, Paltrow turned heads with the unusual statement. “We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time,” Paltrow posted on her Goop website. “We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.”

On an episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert, Paltrow spoke about the backlash stemming from the phrase. “I think at the time I was in a lot of pain. It felt like such a failure to me. It was so hard and I was so worried about my kids. It felt like a layer of the world turning on us about saying, essentially, ‘We just want to be nice to each other and stay a family,'” she said on the podcast.

For Paltrow, using the phrase felt right at the moment. “It’s such a beautiful concept. You’re staring down the barrel of a divorce, the worst outcome possible,” Paltrow also said on the podcast. “My parents were married until my dad died. All my best friends, all their parents were married, they all married their college or high school person, they’re still married. I just didn’t come from a world where there was a lot of divorce.”

Being A Strong Voice

While she might be “self-partnered,” Watson has a lot on her plate with countless roles. Over the summer, she launched a phone line in England for women suffering from harassment at work. “It finally feels like people are realising the scale of the problem, and I’m certainly hopeful that with global standards such as the recent International Labour Organisation treaty on harassment at work, we’ll start to see a new climate of prevention and accountability on this issue domestically,” Watson said in a press statement. Since 2014, Watson has been a UN Women Goodwill ambassador.

Watson can be seen in the upcoming film Little Women, which releases on Christmas Day. Following her stint on Harry Potter, Watson’s acting has taken a backseat to her activism. Helping those in need is more important for Watson than taking another paycheck from Hollywood.
