Is Elsa Finally Getting A Girlfriend? Sources Say Yes

Published on November 2, 2019

Frozen has always been a favorite for the LGBTQ community. The movie’s anthem “Let it Go” was read by many as a coming-out anthem, leading them to believe that Elsa is a lesbian. The fact that she is one of the few Disney princesses without a love interest also fueled the theory that she’s waiting for her princess, not her prince.

Give Elsa A Girlfriend!

#GiveElsaAGirlfriend was born out of the fan desire to see Disney’s first queer princess. The hashtag has been popular on Twitter for years, and it gained a lot of momentum when Disney announced that they were making a sequel.

When the trailer for Frozen 2 dropped and featured a mysterious new woman, LGBTQ+ fans rejoiced, theorizing that this new woman might be Elsa’s love interest. Unfortunately, their celebrations were quashed when writer-director, Jennifer Lee, announced that Elsa does not, in fact, get a girlfriend in the sequel.

Is Elsa Ever Getting a Love Interest?

Lee has voiced her support for Elsa getting a girlfriend in the past, but decided not to move forward with this character development in Frozen 2. In a recent interview with ET she confirmed that Elsa won’t have a love interest—male or female—in the second movie. She went on to explain that she and the rest of the creative team didn’t feel that it was the right time to introduce a love interest for Elsa.

Lee said that Elsa isn’t ready for a love interest yet; she’s still got too much growing to do herself. For now, Elsa is on her own journey. The fact that Elsa is a beloved Disney Princess without a love interest is one of the things that makes her so unique and so lovable. So, it makes a lot of sense that the creative team would want to keep her on her own path for the second movie.

Lee went on to say that all the characters, including Elsa, are always evolving, which means she can’t predict their futures. She said that Elsa may have a love interest in the future, but that she didn’t know quite yet. This comes as disappointing news for all the fans who were fervently hoping they would finally see a queer Disney Princess.

Will Frozen 3 Happen? Will Elsa Get A Girlfriend Then?

Disney hasn’t officially confirmed that a third Frozen movie is happening. But the fact that Lee has been so vocal about the potential future of the characters speaks volumes about the future of the franchise.

Insiders are also fairly sure that Frozen 3 is going to happen. And they’ve shared some more exciting news as well— Elsa will finally be getting a girlfriend! Entertainment website, We’ve Got This Covered, reported that reliable Disney insiders have told them that the plan is definitely to give Elsa a girlfriend in Frozen 3.

How excited should we get about rumors from “reliable sources?” Well, We’ve Got This Covered claims that these same sources tipped them off that the live-action version of “Aladdin” was happening long before anyone else knew about it, and that obviously happened.

So, it sounds like there’s a good chance that not only will Frozen 3 happen, but that we’ll finally see Elsa get a girlfriend. These same sources said that the creative team strongly considered giving Elsa a girlfriend in Frozen 2, but there were concerns that the world wasn’t ready for a queer Disney Princess. They worried that the movie would be banned in certain countries if Elsa came out.

How Close Are We to Seeing a Queer Disney Princess?

There’s no way to know right now how close we are to meeting Elsa’s girlfriend, if she’s getting one. Even if Frozen 3 really is in production, which hasn’t yet been confirmed, it will be years before the movie hits theaters. There was a six-year gap between the first and second movies, so we could be waiting another six years to meet Elsa’s girlfriend.

For now, we’ll just have to cling to the rumors that it will finally happen! And keep the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend movement alive.
