Elizabeth Olsen Was Almost In ‘Game Of Thrones’

Can you imagine Game of Thrones any differently? It’s often hard to picture other actors portraying your favorite characters, but someone else almost played Daenerys Targaryen on the hit HBO series. It might be surprising, but Marvel franchise actress Elizabeth Olsen auditioned for the character, revealing it was one of her worst auditions ever.

The Other Olsen

From the 1980s to the early 2000s, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen charmed viewers with their adorable personalities. They made fans collectively say “aww” as Michelle Tanner on Full House, The twins became so popular that they started to appear in dozens of videos, including their ‘90s series, The Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley. Their younger sister, Elizabeth Olsen, made a few appearances in the videos.

But until the early 2000s, Elizabeth lived in her older sisters’ shadow. Mary-Kate and Ashley starred in a variety of now-iconic films from their Dualstar Entertainment Group, including Passport to Paris, Winning London, Our Lips Are Sealed, Holiday in the Sun, and others. Children growing up in the ’90s wanted to be like the Olsen twins and we don’t blame them. They were perfect and Elizabeth was happy to let her sisters live in the spotlight. But things changed in the early 2000s.

Ignoring The Spotlight

By 2004, the Olsen twins were slowly removing themselves from the spotlight. The media followed their every move, even when Mary-Kate was struggling with an eating disorder. Elizabeth recently told Nylon magazine that she didn’t want to be a part of Hollywood anymore after watching what the media did to her sisters. She decided she needed privacy.

But she eventually persevered and started attending several auditions. Her breakout role came in 2011 as Martha in Martha Marcy May Marlene, in which she played a young woman wishing to leave a cult. Film roles began to pick up from there, even winning her most famous role as Scarlet Witch in the Marvel series.

Elizabeth Admits Worst Audition Ever

But despite the fact that Elizabeth is an accomplished actor now, it wasn’t always easy for her. Every actor has a bad audition story and Elizabeth’s audition for Game of Thrones didn’t go as well as she hoped. If it had, well, she would have played Daenerys Targaryen instead of Emilia Clarke. Can you even imagine that?

Elizabeth remembers her audition consisted of reciting Daenerys’ monologue at the end of the show’s first season, from when the character is burned. “She’s making this speech to thousands of people about how she’s their queen,” Elizabeth commented. “They [Casting directors] didn’t know if they wanted a British accent or not. So, you did it in both. It was terrible. Anytime someone says, ‘Bad audition story,’ that’s one I remember.”

All For The Best

While Elizabeth didn’t win the role on Game of Thrones, her career has skyrocketed in recent years, now trumping her older sisters’ careers. The Olsen twins decided to devote their attention to a fashion line, The Row. This decision allowed Elizabeth to rule as part of the large ensemble of the Marvel Avengers film franchise. Critics now say Elizabeth is more talented than her older sisters. That might be up for debate, but as long as everyone is happy, that’s all that matters. Elizabeth is fine being an actress, while still proud of her sisters for their fashion design business. In fact, she would never say she’s better than her sisters, who she still considers her role models.

Elizabeth commented, “These days, my sisters are mainly an inspiration as businesspeople, and whenever I feel like I’m ready to package some project of my own, they’ll probably be the first people I’ll talk to for advice.” Maybe it’s time to stop comparing Elizabeth to Mary-Kate and Ashley. They’re all Olsens and talented in their own way.
