Brace yourself, Ed Sheeran fans. You might be seeing less of your favorite musician in the next few months. The singer recently announced during the final show of his two-year Divide concert tour that he’ll be taking a temporary break from music. But, are we going to say goodbye to him for good?

Becoming An International Star

Ed Sheeran has been performing music since his teenage years in London, where he pursued his music and performed in hundreds of live shows around the city. The singer would share videos of his performances on YouTube, ultimately gaining a small number of followers. When he traveled to the United States in 2010, fellow performer Jamie Foxx asked Sheeran to appear on his Sirius radio show. Afterward, Sheeran’s music gained more popularity and he eventually signed a record deal with Atlantic Records.

Sheeran’s career has been dominant ever since. He released his debut album, + (“Plus”), in September 2011 and it became an instant hit, grabbing the attention of fellow performers One Direction and Taylor Swift. On a roll, Sheeran released his second album, X (“Multiply”), in June 2014, which debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. and in the United Kingdom, Sheeran’s native country. The project included three hit singles— “Don’t,” “Photograph,” and “Thinking Out Loud.”

Since the beginning of his career, Sheeran has grabbed the attention of indie music fans and independent artists. It wasn’t until his third and most recent album, ÷ (“Divide”), when Sheeran became an international success with all fans—pop music listeners and indie/folk fans. The album, containing his hit song “Shape of You,” broke a Spotify record for first-day album streams with 56.7 million listeners in just 24 hours. Sheeran announced a world tour, and it looked like he would continue the tour for as long as possible. After all, it became the highest-grossing tour of all time. Why would he want to stop? But, in August 2019, the singer announced he had other plans.

Taking A Break

During Sheeran’s final concert performance on August 26 in Ipswich, UK, he declared that it would be his “last gig for probably 18 months.” Prior to the performance, Sheeran was informed that he has played to nine million people around the world. He announced, “As you may or may not know, I’ve been on the Divide tour for over two years now and this is the last day of the whole thing. There is something very bittersweet about it. I love that you guys are here and we are ending it in Ipswich.”

Fans were immediately shocked at the news. Why would he want to step away from touring? He has the biggest tour of all time, so fans were confused. If he’s not touring anymore, is he retiring from music? Is he finished writing and recording smash hits? But, fans have nothing to worry about. Sheeran is taking a mini-break from the music industry to rest, relax, and recharge—as well as spend time with his wife, Cherry Seaborn. Considering how busy he has been in the past two years, he purportedly has every right to take a break.

He’s Not Retiring

Sheeran wants fans to know that this is a break. That’s all it is— not a retirement. He shared on social media, “I’m not bloody retiring either, press are being over dramatic. I’m having 18 months off to make another album and hang out with my cats.”

There’s no need to worry anymore. Sheeran isn’t disappearing forever. He’s taking a small break out of the public eye to focus on making more music [and we need more music] and spend time with his family. When he returns, and he will return, we can’t wait to see what music he has been working on during his break.
