The Truth Behind That Coffee Cup In ‘Game Of Thrones’
Published on May 13, 2019
Game of Thrones has delivered some astonishing moments during its eight seasons on HBO. From the Red Wedding to Hodor sacrificing his sanity, fans were blown away time after time. But in one of its final episodes, the show brought about another unforgettable moment — via an accidental cup of coffee on set. Now, everyone’s speaking out about this prime blunder.
Gotta Stay Energized Between Takes
When the scene made its way around social media like wildfire following the initial broadcast, fans quickly blew it up on social media. Art director Hauke Richter was quick to discuss what actually happened. “We are usually so diligent that this does not happen. The shoot was very hard and demanding and it is likely that after a very tiring episode three shoot, this was simply overlooked by an exhausted crew,” he told TMZ.
Game of Thrones has been a victim of coffee cups in the past. In 2014, a photo of Jaime Lannister holding a coffee cup went viral. After investigation, people discovered that it was taken from a rehearsal clip of the Purple Wedding. But when it comes to the sheer number of goofs, the show has seen its fair share this season alone. One visual mistake involves Daenerys having different hairstyles between shots in the season premiere.
More Money In Their Wallet
While it wasn’t a Starbucks cup on set, the popular coffee chain has seen a boost since the episode. “It’s impossible to put a real figure on how much free advertising Starbucks gets out of the situation, but it’s in a totally different category than product placement because it was accidental, which makes it more valuable,” Hill Impact CEO Dan Hill told CNBC. The company is rumored to have received a $2.3 billion boost in free advertising. To everyone, a typical coffee cup is synonymous with Starbucks. The actual cup seen on the show came from a local coffee shop near Banbridge, Northern Ireland.
HBO decided to chime in with a lighthearted response to the debacle. “The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea,” they said in a press release. If you’re hoping on catching the coffee cup in a future re-airing, you’ll be disappointed. Since the incident, the cup has been digitally removed from the episode. We still have the gifs and memes to remind us every day.
The Great War Is Here
Game of Thrones is in the midst of its final season on the cable channel. The final episode of the acclaimed series will air on May 19. Something that has been plaguing the show is spoilers dropping before the episode. “We won’t be relieved until the final episode airs without a leak. We’re certainly happy we got through production without a leak. But there have been issues that have happened in post-production, or a week before an episode airs. So we’re entering the most dangerous time,” co-writer David Benioff told Entertainment Weekly. Fortunately, many fans have been avoiding spoilers to help give the show big ratings. The season finale became the show’s biggest episode to date with 17 million viewers. The show’s final episode is looking to top that with record-breaking numbers.
While the show is ending, three Game of Thrones spinoffs are currently in the works. A prequel series titled The Long Night is slated to begin filming this summer. This show begins 10,000 years before the start of Game of Thrones. Oscar-nominated actress Naomi Watts will star in the lead role. Tony-winning actor Alex Sharp and Golden Globe-winning actress Miranda Richardson will also appear in supporting roles. The other two spinoff series will be unveiled in the near future. Following the coffee cup mishap, they might simply ban all drinks from the set.

I thought this might be a joke to make us all rewatch that scene, but nope, it’s real. I took a picture too. It’s at 17:49 and it’s a pretty unmistakable coffee cup. https://t.co/uc8I0zoXiL
