Is Charlie Hunnam The Next Wolverine?
Published on June 7, 2019
With Disney’s acquisition of Fox, many Marvel fans are anticipating the X-Men’s inclusion in the MCU. When it comes to recasting, Charlie Hunnam has been brought up as a potential Wolverine. Fortunately, artist BossLogic has delivered what the English actor could look like as the iconic Marvel character.
A Boss Take
The Australian artist posted an image of Hunnam as Wolverine on his Instagram account. As expected, fans are split about this possible casting. “I dig this. My dream casting for Wolvie has always been Tom Hardy. He’s practically built for that role, but this is sick, too,” Instagram user betedubs said. Since Hardy is already busy as Venom, there’s another person fans want in that role. “Tbh I’m down for Efron. Height, build, can portray anger as well as the sarcasm of Logan and I reckon he’d be able to do the acrobat stunts himself as well,” Instagram user wilffred said.
One thing that has irked fans about Hunnam is his height. At 6′ 1″, he’s considered too tall to portray Wolverine. In the comic books, Wolverine is only 5′ 3″. Actor Hugh Jackman, who’s synonymous with the character, is 6′ 2″. While he’s an entire foot taller, many fans have grown to love him in the role.
A Son To Us All
Charlie Hunnam is best known for his portrayal of Jackson “Jax” Teller in Sons of Anarchy. His work earned him two Critics’ Choice Television Awards nominations for Best Actor in a Drama Series. When it comes to movies, he’s taken the lead role on a couple of occasions. In 2016, he took the role of British explorer Percy Fawcett in The Lost City of Z. The following year, he played King Arthur in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
This year, Hunnam starred in Netflix’s Triple Frontier, which also included Ben Affleck and Oscar Isaac. His future films include True History of the Kelly Gang and The Gentlemen.
Let’s Go, Bub
While Wolverine met his maker in Logan, his forthcoming arrival in the MCU is crucial. Virtually everyone wants Jackman to reprise his role in this vast universe. Unfortunately, that ship has already sailed. Ryan Reynolds, however, has been begging for him to come back for a potential Wolverine/Deadpool film. “He keeps coming back to me in all these ways, shapes and forms. I just said, ‘You know, I just don’t think the world really wants to see Deadpool with Wolverine.’ Maybe a cameo from Deadpool? I just think it runs over it for Deadpool,” Jackman said on Sunday Today with Willie Geist.
In the comic books, both characters have run into each other numerous times. Their battles together can be found in the Wolverine and Deadpool comic book series. With both Wolverine and Deadpool in the hands of the MCU, this idea seems a bit unlikely. It can be done, however, with the help of the Multiverse. Introduced in Doctor Strange, the Multiverse features parallel universes much like the comic books. Marvel Studios could have both Hunnam and Jackman be Wolverine in the same universe. Hunnam can simply be part of the X-Men while Deadpool could have those adventures with Jackman.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has plans for the X-Men, but he’s keeping them a secret. “I have vague dreams and vague ideas. But right now, bringing to life the 10,000-plus characters that Marvel fully controls is what the gameplan is,” he told Daily News. Fans expecting to see Wolverine in Phase Four will be disappointed. Concluding in 2024, this phase includes Black Widow, The Eternals, Doctor Strange 2, Black Panther 2, Shang-Chi, and Guardians of the Galaxy 3. This won’t stop fans from drumming up theories on who’ll play Wolverine.
