In the past few years, Cardi B has really proved she’s a star that won’t burn out anytime soon. But the rapper certainly didn’t start out at the top by any means! Take a look at what Cardi did before rising to become a leading artist in hip-hop…

Raised In The Bronx

Cardi B was born Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar in 1992 and grew up in The Bronx in New York City. As a kid, she spent a lot of time with her Dominican grandmother, which is how Cardi B developed her thick accent. However, the young rapper also turned to the streets, becoming affiliated with the gang The Bloods at just 16.

Discovering The Arts

The rapper attended Renaissance High School For Musical Theater & Technology in her youth. Though she often clowned around and got bad grades, Cardi B lit up on stage. She would perform in several talent shows throughout the year for audiences. She even performed hit songs by Lady Gaga and Madonna to entertain the crowd!

Dancing In The Club

After being fired as a cashier at a supermarket at 18, Cardi turned to the strip club to earn money. Though she was a little hesitant at first, the rising rapper had to make money to survive. Cardi B was admittedly poor and suffering at the hands of an abusive partner. The money she earned gave her a new life. She would eventually quit dancing in 2015, choosing to focus on a new career…

A Reality TV Debut

In her early 20s, Cardi rose to online fame by posting viral videos on Vine and Instagram. Her notoriety soon earned her a spot on seasons 6 and 7 of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop, where she quickly became a fan favorite. In fact, viewers first got a taste of Cardi’s rapping skills on the show. Back then, not many could imagine the huge celeb she was set to become!

Focusing On The Music

Cardi eventually quit Love & Hip Hop to focus on her true passion: music. She released two mixtapes at that time, but it was her smash hit “Bodak Yellow” that would put her on the map. Now the rapper has released her #1 debut album, Invasion of Privacy, and has collaborated with multiple top artists like Migos, Bruno Mars, and Jennifer Lopez. It’s certainly an incredible journey from her childhood in the Bronx!
