Will Boba Fett Return To The ‘Star Wars’ Universe?

Published on August 24, 2019

Star Wars Episode IX: the Rise of Skywalker is set to drop in December of this year and fans of the franchise are going wild with rumors and theories.  One fan-favorite character rumored to be making his return is none other than the famed Mandalorian bounty hunter, Boba Fett.

The Character Of Boba Fett

Boba Fett is a clone of another skilled armored bounty hunter named Jango Fett who raised him as his son.  Following the death of Jango at the hands of a Jedi, Boba dawned his father’s armor and became the deadliest bounty hunter in the galaxy.  He made his first cinematic appearance in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back where he didn’t talk much or even have much screen time.  However, he played a crucial role in helping the evil Galactic Empire capture several of the movie’s good guys and impressed audiences with the awesome looks of his armor.  Following this, he made another appearance in the next movie Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi where he participated in a battle between the gangster Jaba the Hutt’s goons and the film’s protagonists.  Here, he supposedly died when he fell into the Sarlacc Pit.  Despite being only a minor character in these movies, Boba Fett has secured a place as a fan-favorite character.

Will The Dead Return?

Though Boba Fett supposedly died, in the formerly canon Expanded Universe (this includes things like books, comics, and games that were made prior to Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm), Boba was able to escape the Sarlacc Pit to play a major role in other events.  Disney upon acquiring the rights to Star Wars declared the Expanded Universe to be no longer canon (meaning that the events of the EU have no longer officially happened in the overall story) but many fans still remember a version of events where Boba Fett lived and believe that such a story could be seen again in canon.  Ever since episode VII was first announced in 2012, hopeful fans have been talking about the possibility of Boba Fett’s return.  Though he has yet to appear in any of the films Disney has released, there are still many Star Wars fans who hope to see the bounty hunter again.  Unfortunately, as much as fans may want an appearance, looking at everything revealed thus far about the new movie, there hasn’t been anything suggesting a return of the beloved Mandalorian bounty hunter in Episode IX.  Not all hope is lost for Boba though.  In a canon Star Wars novel titled Aftermath: Star Wars by Chuck Wendig, a suit of Mandalorian armor was found on the planet Tatooine (the same planet where Boba Fett “died”) which was heavily implied to be the old armor of Boba.  Here is the passage about it:

“From the box, he withdraws a helmet. Pitted and pocked, as if with some kind of acid. But still— he raps his knuckles on it. The Mandalorians knew how to make armor, didn’t they? ‘Look at this,’ he says, holding it up. ‘Mandalorian battle armor. Whole box. Complete set, by the looks of it. Been through hell and back. I think my boss will appreciate this.'”

Could The Armor Be Linked?

Now obviously, it is not outright stated that this armor is that of Boba Fett, but all the info given about it fits.  It’s on the same remote planet that Boba Fett met his end, it’s the exact same kind of armor that Boba wears, and the description of its acid damage fits with how it would be affected by the Sarlacc Pit.  Now, of course, one could argue that this was the armor of another Mandalorian who just happened to be on the same planet when being struck by some kind of acid.  There’s no denying that possibility, but were it the case that this was not the armor of Boba Fett then there wouldn’t have been any reason to include the armor in the passage in the first place.  If it is the case that this is Boba’s armor, the fact that it’s not in the Sarlacc Pit would imply that Boba escaped.  In other words, he’s still alive.  So though there is not yet anything suggesting an appearance in Episode IX, if he’s still alive he certainly could make an appearance, if not in Episode IX then in one of Disney’s planned spinoff movies or tv-shows like the soon to release show The Mandalorian.
