What’s Going On In The ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Post-Credits Scene?
Published on June 18, 2019
Avengers: Endgame will easily go down as the highest grossing film of 2019. As the culmination of the Infinity Saga, it hits all of the right notes for MCU fans. Something that confuses fans is the post-credits scene. What exactly does it mean? Be warned, major spoilers ahead.
Bringing It Back To The Start
As the credits come to an end, you hear metal banging in the background. As many in the theaters wait for another scene, the film simply ends. That sound you hear is Tony Stark building the suit in the 2008 film Iron Man.
With his character’s sacrifice in Endgame, it was fitting to pay tribute with this section. For actor Robert Downey Jr., this was his conclusion as the longest running hero in the MCU. Many are proclaiming his performance in Endgame as Oscar-worthy. The iconic award ceremony has been slowly growing on superhero films, so this could be a possibility. Earlier this year, Marvel Studios gained seven Oscar nominations for Black Panther. The movie earned wins for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
First Of Its Kind
With this conclusion, Endgame is the first film in the MCU without a proper post credit scene. For The Russo Brothers, an actual post credit scene was never going to occur. “It was never in the cards. It was called Endgame for a reason. This is it. This is the ending. The book is closed on that chapter of the Marvel universe and a new book will get written,” director Joe Russo told USA Today. This was rather appropriate for what happened in the film. Following a massive battle with Thanos, there was really no way to incorporate one final scene. The closing sounds was the perfect way to conclude a 22-movie arc. “It’s really just an homage, sort of a little bookend. It started it and it ends it,” Russo also told the publication.
Making Credits Cool Again
Since the first Iron Man film, Marvel Studios held fans to their seats with their post-credit scenes. The first four films in the Infinity Saga slowly pieced together The Avengers team. In the 2012 film The Avengers, fans got their first glimpse of Thanos in the post-credits scene. Spider Man: Homecoming has Captain America jokingly tell moviegoers they’ve waited around for nothing.
Captain Marvel’s post-credit scene has the titular hero confronting The Avengers about Nick Fury’s whereabouts. Fans that missed this film were a bit confused with her sudden appearance at the beginning of Endgame. Actress Brie Larson wasn’t aware that she would be meeting The Avengers in that final scene. “I didn’t know what that was that we were shooting. There was also nobody else there. I was by myself on a green screen and I walked in and they were like ‘just real quick we’re going to whip pan over to you and you’re gonna go ‘where’s Fury?’ and I was like ‘cool cool, got it got it got it’,” she said on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
For Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, picking a good scene can be quite the challenge. “It varies from tag to tag, and it always just comes down to, what do we think would be a fun extra at the end of the movie? What do we think would be a fun thing slightly outside the narrative, but tied to the grander overall narrative, that would be the fun reward for people sitting through all of our names?” he told Entertainment Weekly. With Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s upcoming release, fans will be anticipating that film’s stinger.
