‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ Earns A Dubious Honor
Published on December 2, 2019
The second Halloween is over, every store in America starts blasting Mariah Carey’s hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” The song has been a staple of the holiday season for decades. Unfortunately, our cousins across the pond have a different opinion of the tune.
The People Have Spoken
Mobile phone company Huawei created a survey to find out what the most annoying Christmas song ever is. The British public voted Mariah Carey’s tune as the worst song for the season. Following Carey as the second-worst Christmas song is “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” by Band Aid. As expected, the remaining songs on the list were filled with British royalty. Wizzard’s “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday” took the number three spot while Slade’s “Merry Xmas Everybody” landed at number four.
Make My Wish Come True
“All I Want For Christmas” stems from Mariah Carey’s 1994 Christmas album Merry Christmas. Upon its release, the song gained universal acclaim from critics and fans alike. The song peaked at number three on the Billboard Top 200 chart. Since its release, the song has continued to appear on the charts. The song was re-recorded for Carey’s 2010 Christmas album Merry Christmas II You. In 2015, Carey released a children’s book based on the tune. Two years later, an animated film titled Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You was released.
I Don’t Want A Lot For Christmas
Writing the beloved Christmas song wasn’t a hassle for the pop star. “I just sat down, decorated a little tree and put on It’s A Wonderful Life and tried to get into that mood. Then I sat in this small room with a keyboard and started doing little melodies and stuff. I was going over all the things I think about at Christmas time that make me happy and how to turn it around and make it into a love song,” Carey told Cosmopolitan.
Aside from the tune, its accompanying music video was something to behold. Shooting the visual is one of Carey’s most memorable moments. “See me in the snow in that little Santa suit? That wasn’t a studio, that was a real moment. I was freezing cold, my hair was frozen, it was outside in a snowy field [in New Jersey], and I’ll just never forget it because there were real reindeer,” she also told Cosmopolitan. Another video for the song was shot with a ’60s inspiration.
I Just Want You For My Own
Since its release, “All I Want For Christmas” has brought Carey $61 million in royalties. With 16 million copies sold, it’s one of the biggest-selling songs of all time. With streaming services, the song found new life. On Christmas 2018, the song was streamed a record-setting 10.8 million times on Spotify. Acts such as My Chemical Romance and Michael Bublé have unveiled their own takes on the classic song.
An Eternal Christmas Jam
2019 marks the 25th anniversary of Carey’s Christmas record, and the artist unveiled a deluxe version of the release. This special release features another music video for the hit song with a ton of unreleased footage. With the anniversary coming near, Carey tries to keep it simple. “The more I hear [that it’s turning 25], the more I freak out. I’d rather just say it feels like it’s going to be a great anniversary for the album. We’ll call it a birthday. It’s not that it scares me, it’s just if you don’t acknowledge time, you don’t have to deal with it,” Carey told Cosmopolitan. The artist will be busy this holiday season with their annual run of Christmas performances. While it might annoy folks in the U.K., the song is still loved elsewhere.
