We may think actors’ jobs are easy, but many live in fear of being fired while on set. According to many Hollywood stars, directors and producers are pretty cutthroat when it comes to firing actors for minor (or major) offenses. These five actors were almost certain they would get the boot after blundering on set or in the press, but luckily they were given second chances.

Al Pacino Wasn’t First Pick For ‘The Godfather’

Al Pacino has made his mark on the entertainment industry with several roles including The Scent of a Woman and Serpico. However, his biggest role as Michael Corleone in The Godfather was almost given to someone else. The film’s producers “tried to fire [him] three times” according to Pacino, but director Francis Ford Coppola wouldn’t let them.

Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow Performance Was Too Convincing

Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow performance is as iconic as any in Hollywood. However, studio executives thought about firing Depp because they thought his drunken slurred speech throughout most of the film was too difficult for people to understand. Depp said in an interview, “They wanted to fire me… I fully expected to be fired.” Luckily they didn’t go through with the termination, and we can enjoy his fantastic performance over and over again.

Mark Ruffalo Breaks All The Hollywood Rules

Mark Ruffalo, one of many actors who have played Hulk in The Avengers franchise, was almost fired after running his mouth to the press. During the filming of the latest movie, he gave away several spoilers, including unreleased footage and the title for the last movie of the franchise, Avengers: Endgame. The directors jokingly posted on social media, “Mark, you’re fired,” after this blunder, but according to Ruffalo, he was worried they were very serious.

Robert Downey Jr. Takes A Prank Too Far

Before Robert Downey Jr. became the Hollywood heartthrob he is today, he made his break in John Hughes’ Weird Science. However, Downey was almost relieved of his role after taking a prank too far. He was known as a “serial dumper” on set for using the bathroom in places where he shouldn’t. He didn’t get in trouble until he decided to ‘dump’ in the trailer of his co-star, Renee Props, specifically on her chair. Props went to bat for Downey and saved his job, but he was almost cast out of Hollywood forever.

Michelle Rodriguez Almost Loses The Part For Defending Her Character

Michelle Rodriguez was an iconic female lead in the Fast and Furious franchise. However, she almost left the first movie due to a controversial writing decision. While her character was still being developed, the writers wanted Letty to cheat on her partner Dom, played by Vin Diesel, on screen. Rodriguez pushed back on the decision because she knew Letty wouldn’t do such a thing, however it almost cost her the job. She said in an interview,   “I basically cried and said… ‘please don’t sue me. I’m sorry, but I can’t do this in front of millions of people.'”
